Underground parking, like multilevel decks, solve some space problems but potentially cause huge security problems for UAB. To adapt to this, security cameras and other sensory devices must be installed and maintained on a 24/7 basis with the additional manpower available on site to make them effective deterrents to criminal activity. We can't have the criminals thinking of UAB as a field of crops to be harvested at will.

Cutting edge out of the box thinking there.

You should cater to Freshman not take away from them, they are the blood line of the School, with out Freshman you don't get to be a sophomore or junior or Senior or a Grad Student then a professional in your profession.

This guy HAS to be a bot. Right? I mean what is this incomprehensible drivel it has come up with?

UAB has remote parking and a transit system to get students to campus

My daughter prefers the remote parking. Last time she parked in the deck across from Heritage she got stuck in the elevator and the police had to rescue her.

Seems like remote parking would be better for those who don't live on campus & would totally suck for those who do live on campus & would have to hop a bus just to go somewhere.

That was the idea originally. Parking next to the dorms is for residential students, remote parking is promoted for commuters and is much cheaper

Folks who lived in dorms have ha g tags that allow for parking in the dorm lots.

Parking was a pain when I was there 15+ years ago. It’s always been a problem. Many school ban freshmen from having cars, or only allow them to park in the hinterlands.

My kid lived on campus and barely moved her car. A couple of times it sat so long the battery died.

I'm not sure it's the hardship some folks might think.

I do find it kind of interesting that Tuscaloosa seems to be able to get parking decks on the docket rather quickly whereas UAB has to have a study & somehow plan it for 5 years out in the future.

Maybe the value of the land that the proposed parking deck would be on complicates things.

Parking at the U of A of Birmingham has been an issue. Their building faster what the spaces are their. Not sure, If it would be attractive, but Army has parking with parking lots and buses running every ten min. to central locations. Most people would just like to drive and park to where they are going. But the University has changed land scapes in the past years. Its not so much of a commuter school any more see how Ohio State does it - quite large University that caters to many
people.

All at UAT & UAB projects have to observe five year master plan and do a feasibility study for projects which includes a traffic study for parking decks.

The only difference I am aware between campuses is that the City of Birmingham requires UAB to contribute to a parking fund for a space for X number of occupants before a building will be approved. Which helps in system approval because do not have to wait on a bond issue

For things like parking decks the Board would approve any that UAB bring to the table. They play games with athletics but they aren't so petty they're making parking suck at UAB but not UA

Seems to me that they have been delaying changes to UAB parking & giving the go ahead to UA parking issues.

For UAB they seem to have like a 3 year feasibility study for it.

Of course once they decide to build it, the timeframe is probably the same for both campuses.

In 1831 when UA was chartered in Tuscaloosa the then state capitol city, the federal gov't granted it two townships of land, (each 6 mi x 6 mi for 36 sq mi) so it started out with 72 sq mi of land and has since then become one of the state's 5 largest land holders (with USS and the timber companies). Land space is not the premium there that it is for UAB in B'ham since 1969.

I won't really say much more due to my closeness to the situation, but from my own personal viewpoint - UAB typically has a lot more things to consider when it comes to parking and transportation than UA does. That's the difference between being located in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

It may seem that way, but keep in mind those delays and studies could be (and from my experience working there probably are) coming from UAB administration, not UA System administration
