It will be hard to see him to Nashville, but I hope we make it hard for them.

UAA finals MVP with 31 points.
I’d say he’s Memphis good!

Why are most giving up on M&M? Have you not learned that Penny is almost unbeatable if he really wants a player? We are very much in the running for Murrell.

I haven't given up on him but Vandy did hire his high school coach. I think most can read between the lines. I definitely think it's a two horse race.

I read somewhere Matthew Murrell's high school coach is given credit for his ascension and he has a strong bond with his former high school coach. I am not counting CPH out but that's a lot to overcome. Recruiting has a lot to do with relationships and comfort zones.

The relationship is similar to Penny and Alo.

Anyone overcoming that would be next to impossible.

Yes, both are from Memphis and like Penny. That will be hard to overcome if Penny really pushes hard for him. I think it will depend a lot on how our relatively unknown guards do and if any unexpected departures via NBA or transfer.

I think I wasn't clear.

The relationship between MM and his high school coach is similar to the relationship between Penny and Alo.

You were clear. I think Penny can ease around that relationship and start talking about things that matter to this young man. Whether its NBA or whatever. IF he chooses to fight that battle for MM. As I said, a lot may depend on roster situation at G where we would appear to be loaded for 20-21 season.

My understanding is that MM was a big priority. Also, Vandy now has Stackhouse as Head Coach so i imagine they have a good NBA pitch as well - Stackhouse had a better overall career than Penny (though not the same marketing impact) and did well coaching in the NBA D-League before Vandy. This one will be a battle.

RE: Matthew Murrell 2020 SG
Whitehaven (Memphis, Tenn.) High School’s Matthew Murrell, the state’s No. 2 prospect, announced on Twitter that he will transfer to IMG Academy for his senior season.

Murrell is also the No. 85 prospect in the nation for the Class of 2020, according to the 247Sports composite.

The four-star junior guard said that IMG Academy assistant coach Trey Draper reached out to him a few months ago. Draper is a Memphis native and a former Memphis Tigers guard who played at Mitchell.

The decision comes 10 days after Vanderbilt announced that it hired Murrell’s high school coach, Faragi Phillips, to join Jerry Stackhouse’s staff. Murrell said Phillips’ departure played a role in his decision to transfer.

“He’s been coaching me all my life and I wanted to play a very competitive schedule this year and I knew that IMG was going to provide that for me,” said Murrell.

When asked if Phillips’ addition to the Vanderbilt staff made the Commodores more competitive in his recruitment, he said a little bit, but “not really.”

Penny’s NBA years will long be remembered after Stackhouses are forgotten. He didn’t have the mega star persona.

RE: Matthew Murrell 2020 SG
I like our chances if Penny prioritizes MM. At this point, that may be said about any kid anywhere. I think the slightly uncertain aspect is how much of a priority is MM now? The obvious reason for uncertainty is that Penny is in on some cream of the crop elite recruits at MM’s range of positions. We all hear and read the pundits and recruitniks, local and otherwise, fill their airtime and columns but none of us truly know yet what Penny thinks is ideal for the next class. IMHO, and mostly uninformed at that, Vandy hiring his HS coach is a factor sure but dad loves the Tigers.

I do wonder the things everyone else wonders. Who is option 1a thru 1z? How much of a message does Penny really want to send the country about recruiting Memphis kids? Can MM and family step outside any fandom to judge what’s best for them?

Absolutely. Hardaway’s career was better than Stackhouse’s. Much much better.

Agree Penny was the better player and better peak but Stackhouse was productive and durable for a long, long time.

RE: Matthew Murrell 2020 SG
According to Christian Fowler of Go Tigers 247

Matthew Murrell: After a big junior season and a UAA Finals Championship victory with Team Thad, Murrell has continued to see his stock soar. Memphis has been evaluating and recruiting Murrell since Hardaway got the job, but they have recently backed off a little.

Although there is still plenty of time, it will be interesting to see if Hardaway and his staff ramp up their recruitment of the four-star guard once again.

Penny is too loaded at those spots to bring in a 4 star Memphis kid and he not play much which could be the case without departures.
