Is Arkansas Tech going D-I?
Was driving from Fort Smith to Little Rock the other day and there was a guy on one of the local radio sports talk shows going on and on and on about ATU "moving up with the big boys" in the very near future.

Anyone know anything here?

Must say the guy sounded like he was reading directly from the Encylopedia of Obscure Facts. He had A LOT of information on the possibilities of what, on the surface anyway, seems like an unlikely move.

There's always a million threads on here about some school moving up to Division I, usually schools that don't actually fit the profile of a typical Division I school.

RE: Is Arkansas Tech going D-I?
It’s been bandied about that Arkansas Tech is the MVC’s 12 to Murray State’s 11.

* MVC announced an expansion committee last year
* MVC informed Scottrade Center of its intent to expand to 12 in their latest contract
* Missouri St’s president is in charge of the expansion committee
* Missouri St’s president publicly declared 11 isn’t feasible because it leaves MSU withoit a travel partner

Arkansas Tech fulfills the void of MSU missing a travel partner. It adds a new market and guides the league in its southward expansion with Murray. The Wonder Boys also fill a hole in the league’s color palette by wearing green.

More importantly, Arkansas Tech terrorized Concordia-St Paul this year. Concordia-St Paul whipped up UW-Milwaukee. UW-Milwaukee destroyed Loyola-Chicago.

The holdup this year is the league presidents saw Arkansas Tech is capable of winning the league from those results and it spooked them off. After Loyola’s run, MVC presidents will feel much more comfortable executing its plan.

Assuming you're not the same person I heard on the radio, there now appears to be at least two people who can make a convincing case for a Division I conference to deliver an invite to ATU.

I expect we’ll be watching Arkansas Tech battle Loyola-Chicago on CBS for the MVC autobid in the not too distant future.

I hope you recorded the radio show today or else the people here will be demanding microfiches or time travel as evidence.

Team A is not at all necessarily better overall than or even comparable to Team B simply because A beat B in one game (let alone because A once beat C which once beat D which once beat B).

The Wonder Boys do play very close games with D1 schools at times. The Golden Suns did won a game against a D1 school a few years back in women's basketball. Arkansas do get some transfer from Tech as well. We had some players like Zak Clark, Dickey and Mustaine on our depth charts. They may had to do some basic remedio classes before they could go to Arkansas.

Sounds like you may have some real familiarity with Arkansas Tech.

Does this fellow I heard on the radio have some inside knowledge about a promotion to Division I?

So Arkansas Tech and Georgia Tech would not be peer institutions?

I graduated from Arkansas Tech. I do follow the GAC closely.

Congrats.

Don't know if you'd mind speculating, but any thoughts as to if ATU will be joining the "big boys" as call-in to the radio show suggested?

As incredible as it seems, if they were to go to D-I they wouldn't have the smallest revenues in the division. They would rank #252 out of 254. Sounds like a recipe for success to me.

RE: Is Arkansas Tech going D-I?
NO! It is not happening. I have explained why many times most recently in the "Conference Realignment for D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and USCAA 2018 and Beyond" thread. Most likely what you heard was DavidSt talking nonsense. Arkansas Tech is very happy in D2.

More pure fiction by DavidSt. While the women's basketball team did beat New Orleans it was during the year that the school was doing its aborted transition from D1 to D2 and the Gulf South Conference. It also was not a big accomplishment since New Orleans lost every game that season playing schools from D1 down to NAIA-DII.
