DALLAS (SMU) - The 21st-ranked SMU women's soccer team kicked it into high gear with three second-half goals to beat conference rival Hawaii, 3-2, Friday evening at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU improves to 7-2-2 (2-0-1 WAC) while Hawaii's seven-game unbeaten streak ends and now post a record of 9-3-2 overall (2-1 WAC).

After 30-minute delay in the start of the game due to an incomplete officiating crew, the Mustangs were shell-shocked 16 seconds into the opening kick-off as Hawaii's Natasha Kai sent a long shot from the right side of the field that curled into the upper corner of the Mustang goal, giving the Rainbow Wahine an early 1-0 lead. Kai followed up with her 10th goal of the season with another long shot that found the back of the net at the 18:14 mark, giving Hawaii a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Mustangs looked somewhat sluggish but that all changed in the second half.

SMU came out of the intermission with renewed passion and aggressiveness, winning 50-50 balls and challenging the Rainbow Wahine at every turn. SMU's hard work and effort paid off with three goals in an eight-minute span - starting with freshman Kimber Bailey's sixth goal of the season with a sweet header off an Olivia O'Rear corner kick. Sophomore Hawaiian native Adria Campbell knotted the game at 2-2 by punching in a rebounded shot at the 56:07 mark. SMU took the lead at the 59:06 mark when freshman Allison Brill nailed a shot from 30 yards out and curled into the net.

SMU takes on Houston (4-9) Sunday afternoon in game two of an SMU men's-women's doubleheader. Kick-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Westcott Field

DALLAS (SMU) - After spending the last four weeks of soccer games on the road, the seventh-ranked SMU men's soccer team were glad to be playing at home and it showed with a 2-1 victory over Vanderbilt Friday evening at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. With the win, SMU (8-3, 3-0 MVC) collects its third straight victory while Vanderbilt's five-game winning streak is snapped and now post a 6-4-1 overall record (2-1 MVC).

It was all SMU right from the opening whistle as the Mustangs attacked at every possible chance and played stellar defense, not allowing the Commodores to get into an offensive rhythm. SMU had numerous scoring opportunities but could not finish, as the game remained scoreless going into the intermission.

In the second half, SMU continued its offensive pressure and persistence paid off with senior Ryan Latham notching his first goal of the season at the 55:31 mark off a GK rebound. Sophomore sensation Alex Smith collected his fifth goal of the season with a beautiful free kick from 25 yards out at the 86:39 mark. Vanderbilt stopped the shutout with a goal by Jamie Gilbert in the waning seconds of the game.

SMU outshot the Commodores, 19-9, but Vanderbilt tallied more fouls (23-12).

SMU's next contest is this Sunday at Westcott Field with a 1:00 p.m. match-up against Western Kentucky (5-6, 1-2 MVC) who dropped a 4-1 decision to Tulsa Friday evening.
