Good for you.
Get it again in September to catch Maction. Don't forget this time that you'll need ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN2 to get ESPN3 and to be able to purchase ESPN +. You can't get ESPN3 and ESPN plus without paying for all of it.

NO NO NO NO NO
ESPN+ is a pure standalone. You pay you get it without regard to whether you have cable/sat/IPTV

It doesn't get you ESPN/2/U/News content but you get the ESPN+ content.

I thought the whole point of the cable bundle was you couldnt cancel just one network---you got the whole bundle or you got none. I guess you could cancel ESPN--but the price of the bundle would be the same whether you cancelled ESPN or not. I you can just cancel what you dont want and lower your bill---thats basically a la carte cable. I'd love to cut about 350 networks I never watch.

Well, with most cable these days, there is some ability to customize. Obviously, some channels like HBO and Showtime are completely a la carte, you don't have to buy them at all, you just pay extra for them if you want them.

Also, in my case, COX Baton Rouge, there is a "TV starter" package that does not include any ESPN channels. You get the OTA channels, a bunch of local access channels and that's about it. The only national channels you get are C-Span, the Weather Channel, and the shopping channels like QVC and HSN. You also get a ton of religious channels. You can watch Jimmy Swaggart or Catholic Television all day long if you want.

Then the next tier up does includes your traditional cable lineup, where you get all the news channels (CNN, FOX, etc.), stuff like A&E, Bravo, AMC, the Turner channels, all that, and yes, ESPN and ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NBCSN, and also the SECN (hey, we're in baton rouge).

But notice that doesn't include ESPNU or ESPN News. If I want them, i pay for a "sports pak" that includes them, CBSSN, Tennis Channel, NFL Network, NBA TV, and NHL Network.

I can also get a "sports pak 2" that includes the NFL Network (yes, it's in both paks), MLB Strike Zone, BTN, Longhorn (LOL), Bein, Outdoor Network, and PAC 12 network.

Of course, another way of looking at these "paks" is that I have to pay extra for them rather than getting them all included for my basic cable price.

Point is, cable isn't monolithic. In my case, I can get no ESPN channels, or two of them, or all 4 of them**. That's not pure a la carte but it isn't one size my way or the highway either.

** FWIW, I get everything above except the "sports pak 2".

Personally, I don't mind a bit of "over paying" because I prefer incurring Type 2 rather than Type 1 errors. E.g., I'd rather pay for 3 channels even though I only watch 1 of those three very rarely, BUT be assured that I will be able to watch a big game, then pay for exactly 2 channels and run the risk that a big game will be on the 3rd that i chose not to buy.

In my case, i get all four ESPN channels (and ESPN Classic), the SECN, FS1 and FS2, CBSSN, and NBCSN. That's a LOT of coverage of college football. True, I have missed out. The BTN has started to air quality games, and there were a couple times last year when i was frustrated because there was a B1G matchup i wanted to see only to find out it was on the BTN, which i have chosen not to get. Also, IIRC, i missed a bowl game that was on BeIn.

But basically, during college football season, i am assured of getting 14-15 hours of having 3 or even 4 games on at any one time, which is what i want.

Spectrum just sent me an offer where I could pick 10 channels for $20 a month. It had a lot of good sports options but none of the conference networks but it would cover a great majority of the college sports I want to watch

Sling. $20/month with ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, HGTV, and a number of others. Worth it.

$100 cable bills? Youre out of your mind this day and age.

I pay $185 a month for cable and internet. They keep inching it up but so far still worth it.

I actually have something to lose so will not do anything that involves appropriating intellectual property without proper payment.

FWIW, it's the same with cable paks to an extent. E.g., right now i could easily drop my "sports pak 1", which includes ESPNU, ESPNNews, and CBSSN,. from my COX cable right now and then add them again in September for football, saving myself the cost. They drop and add stuff instantly for you, prorating the amounts owed.

This exactly. I have $60 internet and paying for Youtube TV right now. I have tried Sling and Playstation Vue as well. Have it for when you want it, get rid of it when you don't!

I pay $80/mo. for internet access with Cox Cable. But, I don't really count that as a "television" expense because I would pay that even if I didn't watch any television.

Sling costs $40/mo. That provides the ESPN stations, including ACC Network Extra.

That allows me to watch ND basketball and baseball games and most ND away football games.

I have Amazon Fire Sticks on all of our TV's. WatchESPN is an app on there. So is NBC Sports, which allows me to watch ND home hockey games.

I get NBC with an OTA antenna. That allows me to watch ND home football games.

I have Netflix. So, $40 for Sling and $10 for Netflix. Done.

That is all the television access that I need.

Seems like you've managed to do achieve what i would like to achieve. I pay $185 a month for cable + internet, and as you say the internet part is basically non-negotiable, have to have that.

But you get both for around $130 a month. That's what I would like. COX keeps trying to raise the price of the TV part such that it would push me up to $200 a month, too much. I struggle with them every 9 months or so to keep it where it is but there is creep, it was $160 three years ago.

In the end, I keep giving ground because I don't see a viable option, but your plan could be just that.

There is also the power consumption cost of running all these devices too.

What I found doing some research from a power consumption standpoint is that those little old ladies on their iPhone's all day have got it right and computer gamers are racking up the power bills.

That is why I am moving over to Hulu for TV on the smartphone. Its HD feed without requiring a 10 dollar HD box of the cable box. Then you can connect the smartphone to the TV when you really want to watch something.

With the laptops, just save them for occasional use. You can even hotspot from your phone with an unlimited hotspot plan instead of ordering wifi. I will say that of all the electronics power consumption boxes (wifi, cable, HD box) wifi doesn't use that much power.

What you are also doing here is fixing how much you spend a month instead of having to constantly readjust the bill like you do with the cable companies.

I'm assuming the internet is an "everyday" price of $80 and not discounted.

There is an investment in equipment that you have to make, notably the Amazon Fire Sticks on all TVs. Alexa is nice but only works with supported content. Loading the Fire with 3rd party movies you won't be able to use it.

You like having a lot of the movie channels right?

What I found is negotiating free HBO, Showtime, Starz ect in with a starter cable package is possible. Then you could electively add a sports pack in.

I'm in with an everyday price of $139 with HBO & Showtime included. Within that price I'm paying $21 for the HD/Internet box and another $25 for the broadcast TV fees. My bill was going to be $183 with ESPN included so I'm saving $44 dollars without having the mouse and the sports pack.

Base price is $93. If I go in with a promotion I could probably get it for 12 months at $60 dollars and I can try and push them into giving me Starz free. That would drop the total bill down to $106 for internet/cable with HBO/Showtime/Starz included.

You lose the sports. For me I'm at an age where I can't get through a 3 hour game on TV anymore even if my own team is playing. Live its a different story as its a social event.
