He was going to compete next year with BJ, X, and Godwin for minutes at shooting guard (and Caver if he can get the opportunity to play off the ball w/Kithcart/Wade taking point for short spells). So MHJ was probably only going to get a few minutes per game next year (if any). His decision makes sense.

You’re assuming everyone you listed is still here next season.

RE: Michael Hueitt Jr. to transfer from ODU
There is a difference between a coach and a facilitator . When you sign up to a program you agree to be taught/ coached which requires you to be subordinate to instruction . JJ can be too hard on the kids (as seen on the court) but it likely started when he refused to redshirt and I would assume there were plenty of other times where an attitude might have flared up because the player thinks he’s better than he is . In the end we are not privy to all that happens and maybe a nail was in the coffin early on whereas JJ made his mind he’s not getting minutes because he’s not putting in the minutes when it was instruction time. It appears Godwin did and he saw the court . As others stated you only use 6-7 guys. Some mentioned JJ retiring this year - I say he stays as the last year if only to secure the incoming class comeing in as to not provide an out for others to depart .

Nobody is sorry to see Huitt leave. He never realized he wasn't still the star he was in high school, He never bought into the work hard and it will happen mentality. The message is " Don't forget to take mom with you". Bye,bye!!!!

This makes me feel better. But no need to diss his mom, not that I think you meant to. The support she has for her son is something I bet a lot of kids wish they had. Not to mention it sounds like she bought into the program more than he did. It will be sad to see her depart from the monarch family.

I realize that I am a nobody. But count me among those sorry to see him leave. I thought he was fun to watch (in the precious few minutes that he saw the court), and looked forward to seeing how far he could develop in a Monarch uniform.

I'm too old to keep track of what other posters say on this forum, but I hope you will remember that you wrote this blew if it turns out that he flourishes at some other program -- which I do think he will.

So now he likely has to sit put yet another year and transfer to a low-to-mid major. Competition is tough at his spot (Stith, Green. Godwin, Wade), but if hes not willing to fight for his spot, let him try elsewhere. Best of luck to him.

I think the majority of HS players have that I’m awesome and know everything, entitled mentality. That’s how it is these days. If you can’t deal with kids these days, perhaps you shouldn’t be coaching. MHJ May have been an entitled jerk, I don’t know, but I’d wager a many of the highly talented college players are. If you can’t figure out how to deal with them, you likely don’t win.

I feel bad for Caver. Next season looked like his best chance for the NCAA and his teammates are screwing him over by leaving.

RE: Michael Hueitt Jr. to transfer from ODU
It is sad to me to see a common trend among some posters (not all) whenever an ODU player is dismissed, released, or transfers out. They immediately jump on the kid by saying things like he was a bad player (not good enough for ODU), he had a bad attitude, he didn't work hard enough, he was a defensive liability, ODU will be better without him, etc., etc., etc.

Recent departures like Talley, Fields, Porter, and now Hueitt have all had several disparaging things said about them after it has come out that they are no longer part of the team. Once in a while negative commentary is probably warranted, say for a guy like Pervier that obviously had some significant issues, but it seems odd that it would be the case for pretty much every player that either leaves or has been dismissed recently from ODU prior to exhausting their eligibility.

Where does the coach factor into all of these departures? Is he responsible for some or most of the reasons for them leaving?

It is troubling to me that ODU appears to be more and more a team that is made up of last minute additions to fill out the roster. Many times those late additions are counted on to be among the starters.

Duke also turns over it's roster from year to year, but for different reasons. Theirs is because they get the cream of the crop coming out of high school and they mostly figure on just playing one year before declaring for the NBA draft. I read a couple of weeks ago where Coach "K" stated that getting so many new players every year is "no way to build a program". I immediately thought of ODU when I read that, and I had already had similar thoughts about it myself before seeing it. It also reminded me of Blaine's comments upon taking the job at ODU. He said that he made it clear to the Athletic Director that he was coming on board to "build a program", not to just try to win in a year or two. That's exactly what he did.

Porter in particular. MHJ will not likely be much more of a loss. There are plenty of big guys available, scoop 1-2 up and replace MHJ with another PG and We will be fine

Available, yes. Available to us? remains to be seen. If JJ is not able to land some talent this spring, seems to me it will be further confirmation of his inability to recruit with consistency, and just one more demonstration of why he needs to go.

I predict Caver will take the game into his own hands more often than not. He is the unequivocal leader now, the only one here who has played here from Freshman to Senior.

Talley, Fields, Porter and MHJ make a nice foundation for a team. Those four on a squad would be competitive with and might beat the Monarchs next year.

Haha.

Cavers beats Fields in a 1v1. And is a better passer, shooter, ball handler. Pinckney would probably dumpster Fields too honestly.

BJ > Talley in every category

Godwin, Xavier > MHJ

Porter is the only beast. If they can ever get him the ball.

Caver is definitely better than Fields. Talley vs BJ is about even in my mind, MHJ may wind up being better than X and Godwin. Maybe not. Yet to be seen. My point was that’s a good core group. Those four on MEAC team probably wins the conference. Other than Fields, who was a state POY, the other three are some of the highest rated players JJ had.

This is nonsense.

Porter is a very good mid major player. Talley is a pretty good player. Fields is a backup in the Big South and had awful numbers at that. MHJ couldnt earn time here.

MHJ and Fields would struggle for playing time behind Caver, Kithcart, Green, Stith, Godwin, Wade. Talley and Stith are a tossup, prolly lean Stith.

I dont remember all the recruiting rankings but Hueitt was a low 3 star. Dont think Talley was highly rated. Fields was a walkon. Dont remember Porter.

Reece is def higher than all of them. Want to say Green was similar to thme (maybe higher?). Goodwin/MhJ were close.

How quickly some are to forget. Fields played ahead of Pinckney last season as a true freshman. No reason to think that it would have been any different this season had he still been with the team. It is further evidenced by the fact that he leaves and suddenly Caver can't come out of the game although Pinckney was still on the team.

Yeah you're right. Completely lost track of the order of the backup walk-on point guards. My bad

Caver has the opportunity to become the first ever Jones freshman recruit to graduate from ODU. In 6 years of coaching, that says alot.
