Upper Iowa enrollment is 6,271 in the town of Fayette with a population of 1338. it would not be the first time a D1 school have a city population that small.

Fort Hays State is 14,658 in Hays, Kansas. Population wise is over 21,000. Almost the same size town as Pullman, Washington. They could fit in as a D1 program.

Any schools in IL you see moving up?

Prime candidate as per DavidSt and NoDak. They could play Rutgers and Texas St in the non-conference according to them.

Actually, NoDak and DavidSt are very rarely aligned. While DavidSt's goal is to create enough D1 schools to allow America's entire 18-23 year old population to be varsity athletes, NoDak just wants the University of North Dakota to receive all the respect, accolades and recognition it so clearly deserves as the crown jewel of the entire Midwest. The two visions are usually in conflict.

RE: The Future Of Summit League
Yeah, NoDak’s motivations are simple and one-dimensional in that they’re tied entirely to the glory of North Dakota.

Whereas, DavidSt has enough complexity to transcend the universe and his motivation is to legitimately change the collegiate world for the better.

One’s stuck in a remote bubble, the other’s an all-encompassing visionary that could make him a Czar.

My goal completely aligns with UND’s President stated goals: make UND the foremost research and comprehensive U of the northern plains. It already is but sports help make that perception national.

If that ups the level of the other Dakotas, Montana’s, Idaho, and college hockey, so be it.

If the Summit was going to add DII schools, it would have happened three years ago. It is too late now.

Holy crap. NoDak and I agree on something. Mankato was approached several years ago and said no. They were the last D2 school approached and they are the only one in the region that fits the academic and athletic profile.

I think the WAC would welcome ORU with open arms. GCU/CBU/SU would be the most thrilled outside of UMKC. I say that b/c if ORU jumps to the WAC UMKC probably stays in the WAC. That eastern side of the WAC would be Tulsa-KC-Chicago-Edinburg- Still need 1 more "eastern" option for the WAC. Do you think Upper Iowa would consider the WAC.... 03-wink lol05-stirthepot

UND is a great school. But it isn't the foremost research univ in the northern plains. By the metrics, that would be NDSU. And it isn't even close.

Geez, imo some conferences need to just disband instead of trying to add nobody's from D2 to survive.........how many schools play D1 basketball now?? point made. If you can't hang, then move down to D2 or dissolve the conference, I am sure the schools can find another home.

Right, but only 748 are on campus plus some grad students. How is a school mostly made up of online, adult education, and other non-traditional students, going to make this a D1 school?

Still waiting for other small cities like UIU that are D1....

And how many of those online students and the students on satellite campuses pay the athletic fee.

In the future when the time comes for a split between D1 basketball and other sports will be coming. The MVFC schools will move into the 1A for all sports while the rest would be 1AA for all sports. MVFC would be very strong in football and basketball.

351 schools play D1 basketball now. Here's a couple graphs showing how it's grown since the 1938-39 season to the 2017-18 season. Data from sports-reference.com

There was no such thing as a d1 school back in 1938/39 season. If you count the number of D2, D3 and NAIA schools and some defunct schools and a scattering of 2 year schools at that time? There were like 1000 + schools that would have fit under d1 back then since there was really no divisions back then except for the NAIA that started in 1937.

Yes I understand that. University Division didn't start until 1955 and DI didn't start until 1973. This is just "NCAA" schools listed by sports-reference.com which only lists "major" schools (D1 or equivalent). I'm not sure how they determine if a school is "major". My suggestion would be just to take a look for yourself.
