Said gymnastics news
Rachael Stypinski, one of Kent State’s best gymnasts’ ever, went down with what looked like a serious injury on the last event of her last home meet tonight.
She landed wrong after a high jump on her first pass in the floor exercise. Stater reporter, who’s a former gymnast, said it looked like an Achilles’ tendon injury.
Stypinski had the third highest all-around score in Kent State history at her previous meet.
Great athlete. Nice person. I’ve supervised students who have covered her since her freshman year.
Very sad way to end a career.

RE: Said gymnastics news
I’m not a doctor but I’d bet an Achilles too. She landed perfectly on a fairly easy tumbling run. Didn’t see her ankle twist or anything like that. It had all the signs of an Achilles. It looked like it just gave in. Very sad as it was senior night, her parents were there and it was the last event of her regular season. She had just scored a 9.975 on the beam (one judge had given her a 10.00, the other a 9.95) and was having a great meet. Ranked 15th in the country in the All Around and with her normal 9.90 on the floor tonight she probably would have moved up. Hell of a way to end it.

I love the Kent State web site. A picture of the seniors without Stypinski (taken after the meet). No explanation of why she scored 0.00 in the floor exercise. I know all about HIPPA laws, but when 1500 people witness the injury and the whole campus will know by 6PM Saturday, they can’t just state she sustained an injury and was unable to finish her floor routine. I doubt that was the intent of the law. It’s kind of like Barber Smiths “medical condition”.

RE: Said gymnastics news
Rachel Stypinski was named MAC Gymnast of the year for the third year. Not bad for watching the meet on crutches. That’s how good a year she had. Only news I can find on the injury is it’s her ankle (but not a broken ankle) and she will get back to the gym as soon as possible. Looking at the cast I doubt she will be ready for the NCAAs (which would be her last meet injured or not). The team finished a poor 6th in the championships. Even without Stypinski they could have finished second but they had to count a couple of low 9’s. One on the beam and one on the bars. Both were gymnasts capable of scoring much higher but they just had a bad event. CMU won breaking 197 as a team. Almost SEC like. I’m not sure a MAC team ever broke 197. It’s been rare if it’s ever happened. Scores in general have been climbing so their about due to change the rules and knock them back down pretty soon.

Word from gymnastics SID last week was that she hoed to compete on uneven bars at NCAA regionals. Only impact on her ankle would be landing. No break, no Achilles tear, they said.

It’s good to hear she has a chance to compete. It’s probably her third best event but her dismount really stands out in MAC competition. It’s where an amateur like me can tell she is a step above most of the gymnasts.

The team finished sixth out of six. We either don’t perform well in these meets or the national judges just aren’t impressed. Stypinski did compete in the bars and scored a respectable 9.80. In three of her nine meets this year she scored high enough to Have won this regional. Too bad the injury took away her chance to pull it off.
