Feeding football beast
Realizing that the majority of folks on here only care about football, guess I'm feeding the beast.

Here's a link for those who understand the Big XII is not / will not / would not be the solution some think it would be for NIU's future.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/sto...rojections

Essentially the article talks about the drop-off from Oklahoma to the rest of the conference when it comes to respect for the four play-off slots; in short, the Big 12 doesn't get any. There's a link in the article (http://www.espn.com/college-football/sta...eamratings) which goes to the complete ESPN Football Power Index ratings for 2018.

No surprise, the first non-P5 (/Notre Dame) program listed is the Mountain West's Boise State at No. 37.
Then it goes down to No. 49 and Memphis from the American.
UCF is No. 55; San Diego State is No. 59, Houston is No. 62, Fresno State is No. 63, and the initial C-USA school is Marshall at No. 65.

So which school leads the MAC listings? N. Illinois at No. 67 -- sandwiched between Indiana and Rutgers.
Florida Atlantic is No. 69 ahead of Illinois and followed by MWC's Utah State.

As for the rest of the MAC?
No. 72 -- WMU
No. 82 -- UT
No. 89 -- Miami
No. 96 -- Buffalo
No. 104 -- Akron
No. 107 -- EMU
No. 108 -- BGSU
No. 109 -- CMU
Number .... if you care for the rest look for yourself.

Since Maddawgz isn't here to pontificate about changing conferences, here's a link for those who understand the Big XII is not / will not / would not be the solution some think it would be for NIU's future.

Thanks for posting the link. I don't think Big12 would have ever been a viable or realistic option. I think down the road some hybrid conference might be possible and I think that won't happen for another five years at least. We have to remain solid in football and build basketball to be in the best position when the time comes.

Yep, the Big 12 was never a realistic option. Some people here had wet dreams that the Big 12 would be knocking on our door. I'm sure they were drooling over our 11K average attendance. It gave me a hearty laugh whenever someone would argue that the Big 12 is the place for NIU.

RE: Feeding football beast
ESPN was one of the major architects in the have/have not system we are burdened with today. One has to assume their pre-season rankings will support the quiet nutrification of the programs they overpay/overhype, and the continued casual holding down of the NIU's/Toledo's/Utah State/Boise etc..

Illinois, Kansas State, UCLA will continue to be several spots too high each preseason, while NIU and the rest of the quality G5's will be 4-10 spots back from an accurate non-partial ranking. Our wins over mediocre P5 programs will continue to be exciting "upsets", and ESPN will continue to give Illinois and Purdue more exposure, despite their programs being beneath ours in stature in recent history.

I know I'm not pointing out anything new to most of you, just saying it out loud as I see people quote ESPN rankings as actual fact/gospel, when they have every interest in making them slightly inaccurate on a regular basis. Let the NIU's and Boise's win their way into the top 50, and give the Arkansas et al the "benefit of the P5-doubt", and see if they happen to fall out each season. Sad, inaccurate, misleading, ESPN-self-serving stuff.

If P5 is looking to add the want a school that brings a following and has revenue and/or has finished the deal. NIU has no following, doens't fill seats on a regular basis. While there have been some great wins getting beat, moreover blown out on a regular basis in bowls, make every excuse you want, isn't finishing the deal ibn a marquee bowl even once. Add to that zero on the basektball front, not much to add academically and as mentioned, a "pipe dream.' It's not an opinion or perception of some sports network, conf. officials or America. It's the realiity of the sitiuation past and present. It's not build it theyey will come, it's build it and we will help you build it bigger, better.

No one is dumb enough to blame NIU's current position in the universe on a sports network (although ESPN certainly does have the ability to create or destroy PR momentum for any program when it suits them). The point is that an even playing field is not provided to solid G5 programs like NIU by the media, they do fudge their rankings/opinions/coverage as far as I'm concerned to further back the horses their invested in, and its silly for us to buy into and re-quote their rankings and opinions like the sheep they want us to be.

Ironically filmmaker your post did blame the ESPN sports network in large part for NIU's current position in the universe which is insane, because beyond football, Huskie teams have been stagnate or trending down. As randyfensfanclub1 noted, NIU doesn't help itself much in areas that could help "balance" the field. Consistently losing bowl games doesn't make you a "solid G5 program". It's not ESPN's, FoxSports, or any media's job to provide balance and in the same context that you believe they only back the horses they're (not their) invested in, they would argue the same: you're not unbiased enough to judge the rankings/opinions/coverage. And that reality is accurate for every fan base. Just like the P5s don't or won't acknowledge quality from a G5 program, fans of G5 programs never take into account the added difficulty of competing in a P5 conference.

Yeah, it's not a blame on anybody. It's a reality. It's what people think...opinion. There is no exact criteria to move up not do conf. need to create openings. Facts are involved which determine a decision. And as stated, I think many on here overplay who we are, as other fans, media overplay others. But at then end of the day, while it was a nice story, caught on with a lot of outlets. those making the decisions, contrary to many on here and STF, weren't taking NIU and at least in the short term, won't be.
