Yes, we’re talking about the Augie Vikings again.

Last summer talk of the Vikings joining the Summit League gained some steam after IUPUI left, but athletic director Slade Larscheid mostly threw cold water on the idea, saying the school simply doesn’t have the money to support a move, no matter how much they’d like to go.

This is from my link that I posted. Summit League seems to be interested in Augustana because it is located in the city where the Summit League's office is located.

Quote:The commissioner said he’s had no discussions with the Vikings. But conference leadership is aware of the potential candidates in the NSIC.

“Put it this way – have we talked about them? Yes,” Herbster said. “Those schools would have to have a serious conversation about what is important to them, because it’s a big institutional decision to make. The Summit League can’t be the reason you go Division I. It’s got to be right for the school.”

It seems they are interested in all the schools in the NSIC.

Augustana University 1937 students
Bemidji State University 5365
Concordia University–St. Paul 2800
University of Mary 2758
Minnesota State University, Mankato 15649 Likely candidate to move up.
Minnesota State University Moorhead 7479
University of Minnesota Crookston 2775
University of Minnesota Duluth 11729 another candidate.
Minot State University 3842 wanted to go D1 in men's hockey.
Northern State University 3622
St. Cloud State University 17321 another candidate.
University of Sioux Falls 1576
Southwest Minnesota State University 3700
Upper Iowa University 6271
Wayne State College 3571
Winona State University 8631 another likely candidate.

I should look at the MIAA for expansion instead of Augustana.
Central Oklahoma
Fort Hays State
Central Missouri
Lindenwood
Washburn

The choices are better for Summit than Augustana, but it seems that a couple of the Dakota schools are in favor of Augustana.

Which Dakota schools are interested in Augustana? And the article you keep referring to is all speculation by a writer for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader who has been a cheerleader for Augustana to move up for a long time. The only school on your list who could possibly move and be successful is Mankato State. Though to do so they would need to drop football just like Omaha did. There has been talk, and SDSU, NDSU administrations have admitted it, of seeking out Mankato State for membership in the league.

Pioneer League could be a fit for Minnesota State as a way to keep football. Similar to Morehead State.

This Augustana rumor is going to test the mettle of Dakota Presidents.

Who do they want the Summit to be? Either a collection of state flagships? Or a NCC2.0 transported from D2 days?

The problem with the Summit league if they want to slim down on travel costs is by booting Denver, PUFW and Western Illinois, or fill in places which means you have to dip down to the NSIC, MIAA, Lindenwood and the RMAC for travel. I am not so sure Northern Colorado will move.

I'm surprised the Dakotas could support as many D-I schools as they do now. Can they really support a fifth?

Minnesota is the laggard. One DI school in the state and four other DI schools in hockey and that taps them out financially. Minnesota and Wisconsin are the most underrepresented states for DI, only having 2 P5 and zero G5 schools. The athletes on any Dakota U are mostly Minnesotans, Wisconsinites, Iowan or Nebraskan. Dakotans are very civic and local minded and Minnesota doesn’t even have a strong Gopher culture, so most of the Dakotas have deep support tentacles in that state.

Milwaukee was toying to add football. If they did? MAC would grab them right away. Is Minnesota State-Mankato a separate from Minnesota? Usually each state have two types of landgrants with one a University and the other a State University.

Arizona and Arizona State are separate.

Not sure why Minnesota would have anything to say if Minnesota State-Mankato go to D1 in football? They are two separate school systems. Omaha on the other hand got the same treatment as UAB, Omaha had to drop their 2 best sports in football and wrestling. Now, they are struggling to even win at D1 with their other sports.

RE: Augustana moving to Division I?
The U of Minnesota is both flagship and land grant. The Minnesota State system is a group of glorified teachers colleges. Minn St-Moorhead and St Cloud St were historically as important as Minn St-Mankato. All the states college like Bemidji, St Cloud, Winona and Southwest could have renamed themselves Minn St-place. The U of Minn system has gobs more money, but UM-Morris, UM-Crookston and the former UM-Waseca are tiny rumps that were are just overgrown extension colleges. UM-Morris is an esteemed U that is DIII. UM-Duluth and the new UM-Rochester have some formidable academic programs.

With the 5th one being a private school I think it could be doable.

I 100% agree. Twice in one day! We moved up to get away from the Augustana type schools.

I doubt that Augustana can get a unanimous vote of approval, which is the other reason I don't see it happening. Any school(s) say no (and I think multiple would) and the addition would not be approved by the league Presidents. That has been stated publicly multiple times over the last several years.

I think the goal is try to get the Minnesota schools to make the jump which could get votes.

The Summit tournament could actually be quite a bit of fun withe following line up... One would have to think that USD and SDSU fans would be Augustina fans (I assume there isn't a lot of hate there) and would stick around the tournament to cheer them on if their schools lost.

Augustna
Minnesota State
UND
USD
NDSU
SDSU
Omaha
Denver
ORU
Kansas City

Minnesota DII’s are just a hapless and hopeless situation. The only sport that rallies them is hockey.

When Mn-Duluth won a couple of DII fb championships, their attendance barely budged above 2000.

The Minnesota schools that would have a future at DI are St Thomas and St John’s, and both are DIII. They can practically sell out Target Field for a fb game. St Thomas has been asked for years if they wanted a moveup to at least DII, but have always declined. Concordia-St Paul could make a go of it if they had money.

It is not in the interest of Dakota schools to add a public Minnesota team to the Summit unless they add greatly to the Twin Cities market, as it would likely draw off so many students from the Dakotas. St Thomas to the Horizon makes more sense but it would be expensive.

If Augustana goes to D1? The football team could slip in as number 12 for football. Would the Big 12 take their wrestling program?

Most local people think Augie's football program would go to the Pioneer League. There hasn't been much speculation about wrestling, but have to wonder if it might just go away to finance the transition. Augie probably has more sports (19 i think) than it could sustain at the DI level.

I just don't get why people get their panties in a wad when a school wants to move up to D1. If a school wants to risk it, why not. When App and Charlotte moved up, I never heard such winning and moaning.

It's the size and location of the school.

App and Charlotte are much bigger schools that had been in Division I forever. They both moved football from FCS to FBS, a natural progression for both schools. Appalachian State was a power in FCS, while Charlotte started football from scratch but needed to get to the highest level possible as quickly as possible in order to be viable in a big market.

Augustana is a private school with 2000 students and a $70 million endowment, in a metro area of 250,000 people. The rumored donation would more than double the endowment. The school has a long history in DII, including decades in the old North Central Conference with South Dakota and South Dakota State. But, there is a huge difference between Division II and Division I, even the lower rungs.

It's a tiny school, but there are people in Sioux Falls with big money and big dreams. The tea leaves say they're going to try to move up. Whether a conference invites them is anyone's guess.

Tiny school or not, if they have the backers why are people concerned if they move up. Especially being a private school? I just don't get why it bothers people.
