You do know that many of these detainees will be released, in America, pending a court date, which in some cases takes years, right?They will then disappear into the woodwork.

I tend to agree. I don't think our soldiers should be forced into being border patrol agents. Hire more agents if that is what is needed. I can see the NG being used in a case of imminent national security threat for a limited time period..but..not long term.

My grandfather would have loved for me to join the home town artillery unit but I choose to join the aviation unit a little bit further down the road. So you don't need artillery on the border but you do need to make sure they stay trained and ready to deploy if needed. Or as my role in the NG was to fix a system on the helicopters that would have come in very handy in searching for people (using the military as law enforcement aside of course). So would somebody like that be more useful walking the border or making sure those system maintained. Keeping in mind that person needs to maintain there skills.
