2016-17 EADA Revenues/Expenses
I just noticed this was updated, so I don't think this is a repeat post (if someone has posted 2016-17 EADA data already, my apologies). Here are ACC numbers as reported by the schools:

Conference: ACC
institution_name TotalRevenue TotalExpenses
Florida State U $132,406,509 $91,826,201
U of Notre Dame $107,951,851 $77,848,915
Duke University $ 94,651,845 $78,003,041
Syracuse Univer $ 90,561,739 $66,592,152
U of Louisville $ 88,790,003 $70,043,722
Clemson Univers $ 75,132,803 $74,425,788
UNC Chapel Hill $ 74,470,787 $55,544,357
NC State Univer $ 70,846,066 $52,752,014
U of Pittsburgh $ 70,777,716 $57,409,973
U of Miami (FL) $ 65,905,852 $64,450,274
Virginia Tech U $ 65,603,973 $58,413,292
Uni of Virginia $ 62,031,687 $62,031,687
Boston College. $ 57,186,932 $55,704,037
Ga Inst of Tech $ 55,604,704 $49,607,286
Wake Forest Uni $ 49,223,985 $43,952,058

My first thought: what's up with FSU reporting over $132M? That tops every school except Texas, Tennessee and Alabama. Amazing - just not sure where all that money came from. FSU's take includes $86,565,283 from football and $20,233,195 from basketball in 2016-17 as reported by the school.

RE: 2016-17 EADA Revenues/Expenses
The total operating expenses for UNC's athletic department rose again in 2016-17, reaching $96.5 million, according to the revenues and expenses report that the school submitted to the NCAA in January. UNC's total operating expenses were about $83.5 million three years ago.

Just where do these numbers keep coming from.

That's also an example of different accounting methods, apparently. UNC reported $55M in total expenses to the EADA, but your link says $96.5M. Could be "unassigned" expenses (not applicable to a particular sport), which I didn't include in my analysis, but probably should have since most ACC schools have big ACC Network related expenses right now.

Looking at Syracuse's numbers on the Equity in Athletics website, the numbers in the chart above exclude both revenues and expenses "not allocated by gender/sport," as do Florida State's. The revenue and expense numbers in the chart exactly match the numbers without amounts "not allocated by gender/sport," so the source is clearly the same. However, omitting these amounts can make a big difference. For instance, FSU's total revenues are actually $144,692,380 and its expenses are $142,415,292.

Yes, I just realized that... which means I'll have to do it again (ugh!). That said, the numbers will only get BIGGER, so my original question stands: how did FSU report so much revenue?

RE: 2016-17 EADA Revenues/Expenses
Man, I don't know. A lot of times these things are associated with a one-time transfer of funds from boosters to the program for some purpose, or a large gift. I think FSU saw like a $20M bump a few years ago related to the indoor practice facility build.

I have no idea what to make of this though. Obviously, these things are hugely manipulated, but I'm not aware of anything obvious to correlate. I know a pretty significant stadium renovation is getting underway.

nole would have a better idea if it's anything more than bookkeeping behind it.

If you're talking about athletic department expenses, you may be including non-intercollegiate athletic expenses such as PE, IM, and health and fitness for students and faculty as well as club sports. The bigger the student body, the more these expenses will be.

RE: 2016-17 EADA Revenues/Expenses
The NCAA, IRS, EADA, et. al. all have different reporting criteria. As Lou noted, FSU could have had some funds that the EADA considered revenue but the NCAA did not. That makes sense when you consider EADA is concerned about spending per male athlete vs female athlete.

RE: 2016-17 EADA Revenues/Expenses
My best guess (but not sure it's a good one) is added revenue from FSU's Champion's club and College Town which are efforts to increase revenue streams.

I do know that some of these numbers are different or vary based upon how they account for booster donations.

The biggest variance for FSU I noticed was FSU's women's revenue. Hard for me to believe there is that much revenue there. Thrilled, but....just hard to believe.

I was about to say how in the hell is UNC fielding all those non-revenue "Director's Cup" teams for only $55m? And if the accounting can be THAT far off, the numbers are worthless.

I know UNC has maybe the 2nd largest athletic endowment in the nation.

IF those numbers above don't reflect distributions from a huge athletic endowment, that could explain UNC's situation.

I just looked up UNC's Expenses in EADA for 2016-17. They reported just under $90.5M, of which about $35M was not allocated to any specific sport or gender.

I'm not sure UNC has the 2nd largest endowment in the ACC, much less the nation. When you talk national, that includes Harvard University ($36 billion in 2014), the University of Texas System ($25 billion), Yale University ($24 billion), Stanford University ($21 billion), and Princeton University ($21 billion). Nobody runs with those big boys... (numbers come from National Center for Educational Statistics)

According to NCES, the top ACC endowments are:
11. Notre Dame* $8 Billion
14. Duke $7 Billion
18. Virginia $5.9 Billion

25. Pitt $3.5 B
33. UNC $2.7 B

So unless they have raised a boatload of money in the last 3 years...

Payments from the Endowment are used mostly to pay the scholarship costs of all of the student athletes on campus. These numbers show up as a subsidy to the athletic department.

Those are ACADEMIC endowments. Every list (aleit they are rare) I have ever seen of athletic endowments had UNC has 3rd largest, only behind Stanford/Notre Dame.

North Carolina $210,500,000
Duke $182,200,000
Boston College $156,700,000

Louisville $28,200,000
NC State $26,600,000
Miami $15,700,000
Clemson $4,900,000

Stanford was at $600 Million in 2012.
USC was at $185 Million in 2015.
Ohio State and PSU were at $46,139,682 and $49,390,069 in 2009

Correction. By my best semi knowledgeable guestimate nationally on ATHLETIC endowment, it goes:

Stanford
Notre Dame
UNC

We are working on it.
Carolina has launched a five year, 4.25 Billion campaign (https://campaign.unc.edu/)
“For All Kind: The Campaign for Carolina” is the largest fundraising effort by a North Carolina university.

I guess I stand corrected. Does anyone have a link showing Athletic Endowments by school? or is this the kind of thing you have to research one school at a time?
