2nd school in 5 years that closed down from that conference. Dowling closed in 2016.

Dowling was in the East Coast Conference, which Concordia hasn't been in since 2009.

3rd Concordia to close in a few years--Oregon and Alabama. In addition, Concordia-Ann Arbor essentially closed as they gave up independence and are operated as a branch of another Concordia now.

There's still a lot more Concordias though...

Ohio Valley (WV) joins the NAIA River States Conference as a provisional member pending approval of their membership in the NAIA.

Delaware State is shutting down Wesley College athletics at school year's end. The Atlantic East Conference will be down to 6 schools and lose all its AQs in the summer of 2023 unless reinforcements arrive from somewhere.

Wesley merged with Delaware State which means that Delaware State is going to have white athletes now if they merged the athletic departments together. Delaware State gain students from the merger.

Iona to acquire Concordia New York Bronxville Campus

Concordia's students can now finished their degrees at Iona. They are planning to turn that campus into a health science for Iona. I wonder if the athletes will be transfering over as well? But, it may not help for the ones who play sports that Iona does not sponsor.

You always wonder if the athletes at these smaller schools will transfer over to the D-I schools acquiring them. They never do. Stop wondering. If you are at a D-II, D-III, or NAIA school and your school gets subsumed by a D-I school, you transfer to another D-II, D-III, or NAIA school.

These are not athletic mergers. The D-I athletic departments continue on as always. The smaller athletic departments cease to exist.

The best athletes might go over to Iona, but Iona might help the others to get into another D3 school.

So maybe a couple get to ride the pine at Iona, and everyone else transfers.

Some will prefer to stay and not participate in athletics. Depending on the ethos of the school, their previous financial aid commitments may or may not be honored. But if it is honored, there is a better chance of the student staying to finish out their degree.
