D3 St. Thomas Would Be Booted From Their Conference

I Think D2 NSIC would be their landing spot for some years and then go D1 and park football in Pioneer League.

Really, you don't say. I'm shocked that you would say this. There is no school left that you have not said you think could go D1.

NSIC fans are intrigued by the idea of adding St. Thomas but there are a lot of logistic issues that would have to be resolved. If STU does not get a formal invite from any D2 conference they are stuck in D3.

Who would not welcome St. Thomas to D2? Northern Sun would get stronger, and the possible St. John's, Minn. to follow them up. Going Independent will not work at all levels for all sports, and no other D3 conferences fits them. With Augustana want to go D1? St. Thomas could replace them.

The Northern Sun is the only D2 conference that would take St. Thomas, the others are too far away. Augustana wants D1 but does D1 want them; at this moment that answer is a "no". The NSIC is happy with 16 members and will only consider new members only if or when a current member leaves. Has St. Thomas ever hinted at a desire to leave D3?

UST would be a "gift from the gods" for the NSIC. Strong academics, strong athletics, strong endowment ($430 million in 2016 before picking up a $50 million gift in 2017). I think the fan bases would get juiced to cheer against the rich kids from St. Paul. So if the NSIC has to choose between UST & Upper Iowa University...goodbye Upper Iowa. How are they feeling about the Univ of Mary these days? Wasn't there some talk about UM Crookston facing reality and moving down? Maybe it is an excuse to get out of long bus trips to Minot ND. (In the Air Force, getting sent to Minot was like getting sent to Siberia.)

Someone suggested that they might be at home with the Wisconsin conference (WIAC) and their larger enrollment public d3s, like Whitewater, Stevens Point, Eau Claire, etc. I don't think the Iowa d3 conference would relish the thought of the Tommies moving in.

Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington has been contacted by the GNAC twice in a span of 9 months.

The idea of St. Thomas to the NSIC is interesting but it's doubtful the conference will kick someone out just to make room for a new school. Augustana is the only NSIC member who has talked about leaving. UST joining the American Rivers Conference (formerly Iowa) would be the same situation as now in the MIAC. Joining the WIAC is not too much of a stretch but it is a MN private school joining with all WI system public schools.

Bellevue College does meet the basic D2 requirements competing in the NJCAA. Surprising that the GNAC would be talking to a school without football.

is it part of the made up thing? That's messed up if it is. This was a real thread, other than David's elaborate assumptions

No it's not made up and its real. BC offers 12 4 year degree's and have put in a lot of money into facilities for Baseball Softball M/W Soccer, next is their basketball venue that sits around 2,500 seats. The campus has built dorms and plans to add more a long with they are building new academic building on campus as well. The school sits at 31k students and is one of the bigger school populations for higher ed who offer bachelor degrees. This is a very real thing.

There have been talk that some large JCs could be supported as a 4 year school. Bellevue I think is close to 30,000 students in the Seattle area. Even students at schools with no sports want athletics to start up as well. The schools that are talk about are areas in large cities that have no 4 year to become one. I would not be surprise if CSU-Bakersfield gets Bakersfield JC to merged. No need to have two public schools in a town like Bakersfield.

Penn State as a system has a network of 2 & 4 year schools, Arkansas State as well, LSU does. Wisconsin has recently clustered their 2 year schools with nearby public 4 year schools. I could see some advantages in creating a real educational "network" for a state rather than a "patchwork".

I don't know if that would work on a city level. Would merging Univ Nebr Omaha with Metro Community College in Omaha provide benefits for each institution? Their missions are very different although there are overlapping areas. ?? Maybe our educational professionals have ideas about this?

Iowa Western CC across the river from Omaha was very deliberate about creating a strong athletic program in order to give students a real "residential campus" experience. It has worked. But they also are real happy to be in their niche and have NO desire to be a 4 year school. They've found a nice sweet spot in the market for what they offer.

All this talk about UST moving up to the NSIC is probably all for naught, even if Augustana moves to Division I. If it happens, I think the NSIC would rather boot out UM Crookston than add the Tommies to make it a 14 team league.

Why would CSUB merge with the local JC? If anything they could offer 4 year degree options at the JC from CSUB. It would be cheaper and most cost effective to the student.

CSU-Bakersfield would inherits the athletics of the JC. That includes football which plays in an FBS size stadium. The JC could be used for remedial courses to help students who are weaker in a subject.

yes there is, there's no other JUCO close to big Bakersfield. We have one in Reedley and Visalia and Fresno and Lemoore. That's 4 feeder schools to Fresno St. and Fresno Pacific. The Renegades are the only feeder to CSUB

And yes they have a 22,000 seat fb stadium. I was there when Reedley College beat College of the Canyons for the state/national championship in 2002.

St. Thomas's Future, NSIC's Commish Is Watching

It looks like the NSIC is watching. If the Thomies get booted? They could go to NSIC. Their hockey would be reclassified to D1. Wonder which D1 hockey conference will take them? It seems that it might be a short stop because it seems there is hints that they may want to go D1 according to the article, park their football in Pioneer, and join the Summit for the rest of their sports. This would then give Minnesota two D1 schools.

Lindenwood- St. Charles and Lindenwood Merged Undergrad Programs, Sports To End At Belleville

The BoT ended the programs of the undergrad where all students and athletes will transfer to St. Charles campus starting fall 2020.

This gets me wonder if they are doing this to push Lindenwood to D1?

NAIA baseball powerhouse Lewis-Clark State will leave the Frontier Conference and join the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The decision came as the NAIA move from 2 divisions in basketball to 1 division. LCSC played in D1 division while the CCC played in D2. Playing in the CCC is easier travel than that of the Frontier conference.

The CCC gets strengthened with the addition of Lewis-Clark State. They host the NAIA baseball championship regularly.
