I believe so. They were always a strong program but their recent stretch has really catapulted them into the top levels of college basketball. Wright is now arguably up there with Coach K and Roy as the elites of college basketball.

Wright now one of only 5 coaches active with multiple national championships in football and basketball....
Coach K
Williams
Wright
Saban
Meyer
that's the whole list.

Indy ALMOST did it in 2010 but failed on both counts lol.

Since 1985 - when the NCAA did away with byes and went to a straight 64 team bracket - only Duke (5), North Carolina (4), and UConn (4) have more national titles than Villanova (3). Kentucky also has 3. I think that safely qualifies 'Nova among the elite programs in college hoops.

There are just six blue bloods, which not only has to do with # of titles won, but also longevity. E.g., Kansas is a blue blood and UConn isn't, because Kansas has been in the elite "since the Mayflower" while UConn is "new money".
Indiana, Kansas, Duke, UNC, UCLA, and Kentucky are your blue-bloods. Villanova is "next tier".

Indiana needs to be removed. Their "longevity" has ended.

You can make the case that things are changing. UConn or Villanova is way more relavant right now than Indiana to a lot of people.
Since 1979- when the tournament really entered the modern age.... so 40 tournaments now.... 19 champions. Only 10 multiple champions. Nova now one of only 6 teams to have more than 2 titles. Louisville, UNC, Villanova, Duke, Kentucky, and UConn.
or if you take it to 1985- when tournament expanded to 64 teams. So 34 tournaments now... 17 champions. 8 multiple champions. Only UNC, Villanova, Duke, Kentucky, and UConn with more than 2.

Yep. They seem to have passed their "sell-by" date. I wouldn't argue with dropping UCLA either.

I thought Michigan collapsed more than Nova dominated. Nova was very consistent andgot ahead. Michigan started missing 3s they didn't need and weren't in position to rebound for. At one point the Michigan PG dribbled straight to the basket and was open for a layup but brought the ball back out. Michigan also had success with the press but abandoned it. I know it is hard to press for a whole game but when it is working and you are 15 points behind...

Nova was just a much better team. It was evident all season long. Nova beat Michigan by double figures with Brunson and Bridges both having off games.
If Nova was clicking, they probably beat Michigan by 30+.

Nova was 3/13 in the 1st half from 3. If they make just 2-3 more, it's a 15 point game at halftime and game over.

They are a 3-heavy team, too. Last night, though...man, I hadn't seen them play that tough underneath their own boards and not be afraid to drive there most of the season. It was definitely a different approach; speaks to how great a coach Wright is.
...and I have to wonder what might have been if Villanova didn't make it out of the first weekend two years ago, and then again last year. Had the suspicion, because there were definitely whispers out there, that some of the money folks at Nova were getting a little tired of that slump; maybe he's pacing for another school or in the pro's.

yeah, that was definitely the gorilla in the room. Part of it some bad luck draws- you can draw some pretty bad ass 8 seeds in rd 2 who just didn't put it together all year long(see Wisconsin last year). Or a team of destiny(UConn in 2014). But still- there was a ton of pressure on him in 2016.

Someone lost a 23 point lead in the tourney this year. Forgot who it was.

UCLA is definitely still a blue blood. IU is getting to the point where they may slip out, but not yet.

IU hasn't even made the Sweet 16 in 16 years. That hardly spells "blue blood".

Villanova will do that to you. They are sneaky dominant, mostly just by being relentless. Just when you think you are gaining ground they slam the door shut on you. They don't have to be on top of their game to win by double digits.
