Iowa’s Employment Problem: Too Many Jobs, Not Enough People
Quote:Manufacturers in northern Iowa are begging Terry Schumaker for freshly trained workers for their factories. The problem is he doesn’t have enough students to train.

“It’s not like we have the people beating down our door to apply,” said Mr. Schumaker, a dean at the North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

It is a problem playing out in many parts of the Midwest, a region with lower unemployment and higher job-opening rates than the rest of the country. Employers, especially in more rural areas, are finding that there are just too few workers. That upends a long-running view in Washington, D.C., and many state capitals, where policy makers often say the unemployed simply lack the skills to get hired.

Spent a few months in Des Moines some 55 or so years ago. Still haven't gotten the stench of soy out of my nostrils.

Probably better than living in Florida.

Florida, especially Orlando, is a class A dump. Bums everywhere.

Yes.

Soybeans can't possibly be worse than lumber mills.

Wiilliston area has nearly a billion in nat gas proceasing plants under construction. There no longer spots for so many truck drivers anymore, as there is water and rig wastewater and crude and natgas pipelines almost checkerboarding the area.. Rig counts have moved up again and the new wells are even more produtive. But the overall employment is moving up to more skills and degrees. It's now all about efficiency with employment not as easy bit still avalable.

Yes Orlando is a dump. Havent been there in years. I'm 15 min. from the beach and Iowa don't offer that.

The beach is overrated. Besides, its another bum magnet.

I, for one, would love to leave Florida if I had the money. I would move somewhere where i would see a ufo before I saw another person....
