You can have growth without completely losing your sense of place, however.

I only get in to Memphis every couple of years but imho what looks really shoddy are the new apartment complexes in the far south Main area around Carolina. Looks like stuff that belongs in suburbia. Yeah it's better than the vacant lots that were there earlier but better design would have been much better than what they ended up building.
