I have a idea to build some awareness about our athletic program. South Carolina has a large amount of very heavily traveled interstate's. We could put up very simple but bold double sided billboards at locations thru out the state. I-95 entering SC from NC(the real carolina). Major intersections 85 & 26 in Sptbg.85 entering from GA( THIS IS GAMECOCK COUNTRY). 20 & 26 in Cola etc etc. Just 10 billboards leased year round could make a impact and generate awareness and some excitement. It could have a possible impact on recruiting? Is this a stupid or good idea in your opinion?

I know one thing, Jay. It would be a good idea in Beaufort County. I'm consistently amazed at the lack of USC publicity down here. I mean......we're the state university and all......but you'd never know it in the Hilton Head area. The state colleges as a whole are virtually ignored by the media......and it's impossible to listen to USC, SC State, Furman or Citadel on the radio. Walterboro is the nearest USC affiliate......but you can't pick it up from here. Only recently did a Savannah station pick up the Clemson network.

Coverage in the newspapers is limited as well. A good example was this past week when our win over UNC in baseball was relegated to an inside page with a small b&w photo. American Legion baseball.....I mean, you've got to be kidding......was the dominant story on the front.....along with the NBA and golf. I remember one time when a story on SEATTLE pro sports actually was on our front page as a dominant story. Geez.

USC needs some publicity down here. I understand we may finally get USC football on the radio down here this fall.......but last I checked, Hilton Head was part of the state of South Carolina......so that should be a given.

Reminds me of traveling thru Tenn. one year and I went thru Knoxville and saw huge billboards saying this is Orange Country.


I go thru Atlanta and Chattanooga now to go to Nashville :)

Here's a thought:

One problem (beyond the scarcity of coverage in my area) is that the media in this state makes a conscious effort, even in Columbia, to equally divide the coverage between USC and Clemson. This is kind of unique. While living in North Carolina and especially while living in Florida, I just didn't get the sense that it was the same there. The state named schools pretty much dominated any areas outside of other schools' towns. For example, unless you were near Durham......North Carolina is clearly the school of choice by the media and many residents. They get the publicity becuase they are called "North Carolina." In Florida, the Gator fans dominated.....and the media covered the Gators like crazy and publicized them, even BEFORE the Gators won the title in 1996. There was no doubting who the state school was........the Gators are promoted much more than Miami or FSU......again, they ARE the school that's actually called "Florida." It's the same deal in Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Indiana and other areas.

I think we have a unique situation here. We're the smallest state in the south.....yet we have to divide this state between two major universities. That hurts us in several ways, I think.

You hit on some good points Galactus but other states share 2 major schools. GaTech and UGA. AU and Bama and the 3 Florida schools. GaTech is in a major city and that helps alot.
