this is why i mentioned the other day being curious if that missing UTSA game has any affect on the postseason

RE: Baseball 3/29 - 4/1 action (Easter weekend)
Newspaper write up of Saturday’s USM vs Rice game along with 2 videos...the first is the walkoff by Wallner while the second one is Reynolds’ game tying 400 ft 2run single in bottom 9. Hopefully his injury isn’t too severe but it sounds like he’ll be limited to pinch hitting duties the next several games.
https://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/stor...476141002/
USM coach Berry on the dropped fly ball that should’ve ended the game:
Scott Berry’s team, down to its final strike in the ninth, scored 3 runs on a single Owl error by right fielder Bradley Gneiting and tied the game on pinch-hitter Luke Reynolds’ two-run single. The error was the result of a dropped fly ball off Casey Maack’s bat. Gneiting battled a bright sun beaming from the same direction the ball was coming.
“(We work on that defensively) every time the sun’s out, because there’s an art to playing it,” Berry said. “He battled it. I saw him, it hit right in his glove. Because he couldn’t see it, he didn’t know when to close his glove. There were so many different people that came through that I lost track of all of them.”

And from the USM YouTube site here’s the game highlights
https://youtu.be/DNsg2oPxyGo
Fast forward to the 1:34 mark to see the dropped fly ball
And another lucky play that USM had happen in its favor was in the top of the 2nd (first highlight on the video)....Rice got its first two on and the next batter hits one that our SS boots but it deflects off him directly to our 2B who was covering second for the assumed DP. Our 2B catches it on the bag and throws to first to complete the DP. So instead of Rice possibly scoring there or at least loading the bases with 0 outs it’s now 2 outs and a runner on 3. Next batter pops up to 3B to end the inning.

Game 3
Rice pitcher had us shut down through 4 but got wild in the 5th. USM loaded the bases but had back to back runners thrown out at home on infield grounders. Then Matt Wallner strikes again...GRAND SLAM dead center!!! 5-2 USM
And almost like yesterday next batter fly ball to center and the CF lost it in the sun for a double. Only exception was CF never came close to catching it....lost it completely
Edit
After above sun aided double, wild pitch, walk then double steal makes score 6-2 after 5

I recognize this is bad juju and all since the game isn’t over.
But Rice is a bad baseball team. That just looks like a bad team right now. Maybe they improve. But right now, that’s not a team I look at and think, “Yeah. They should be winning more than they are.”
And that hurts me to say because I’ve always appreciated that program and we NEED for them to at least be good.
Pitching is still pretty good (but not close to what it was even a few years ago). But that has been some Bad News Bears level stuff in the field all weekend. And looking at the numbers, this probably isn’t the first weekend like this.
Time for Graham to go. I defended him last year, thinking that was just a down year. I don’t think
This is getting better, though.

And our bullpen bites us in the butt again. Rice scored 5 runs on just 3 hits (along with an error, HBP and 2 walks) in top 8 to take a 7-6 lead

Headed to 9 with Rice up 7-6
And when USM comes to bat we’ll have 9/1/2 up so if someone gets on and no DP happens Wallner bats fourth

To the bottom of the 9th we go with Rice up 7-5. Will be interesting to see if the injured Luke Reynolds pinch hits 2nd or 3rd this inning (or if he’ll bat at all)
