RE: Lefty Driesell elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
When I was a student at Ga Tech in the early-to-mid 80's, like many other ACC student bodies attending MBB games, we enjoyed wearing our skull masks when the Twerps came to town. The Lefthander was always a good egg about the razzing we gave him. Back then, the ACC had so many characters for HC's which made it so fun. Lefty was certainly a character. My favorite story was when he was asked to sign the skull masks at various arenas he always signed with a big X and then claimed "I went to Duke and I never was taught how to write".

It's really a shame what happened to him at Maryland. It's really a shame what happened with Lenny Bias that trickled down to Lefty (and eventually Bobby Ross).

From an article about him:

JMU hadn’t reached the NCAA tournament in 11 years when Driesell coached the Dukes to the 1994 field. That was the sixth of his seven consecutive winning seasons in Harrisonburg. JMU hasn’t enjoyed more than two straight winning years since.

Lefty’s career will be honored by the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame this Wednesday June 26th in Virginia Beach. He is already a longtime member of the VA HOF, but it is a chance for Hampton Roads Dukes to see him speak for only $20. He put on a great show last Fall at the National Hall of Fame induction. It sure would be nice to get him to JMU before it is too late.
