Rice in the MLB (2018 edition)
Happy opening day y'all. I haven't looked it up - how many Rice guys made the opening day rosters?

Here's a trivia question I just noticed on mlb.com (no cheating). Today would have been the first day since 1968 in which all of the MLB teams were scheduled to begin their seasons on Opening Day (usually you get a few or perhaps half the teams start and then the rest the next day). That's weather permitting of course, and Washington (and Anthony Rendon) at Cincinnati is already rained out for today.

Here's the question - how many MLB teams were there in 1968? I'll give you a hint (sort of) - there are 30 teams now. Again, no fair cheating.

Yes, you are correct sir.

And now after I wrote the first post, I read the sad news this morning that Rusty Staub has passed away. Longtime Houstonians may recall him breaking in with the then Houston Colt 45s as a teenager. I remember going to New York Mets games in the mid 1970's and seeing him as one of my favorite Mets. In fact, my brother and I used to go to the area beyond the outfield at Shea Stadium after the games and watch the players drive home since that was a good place to get autographs, and I remember he was the only Met to have a chauffeur drive him home.

RIP Le Grande Orange.

Tony Cingrani and JT Chargois on the Dodgers roster. JT really impressed this spring.

The Dodger announcers yesterday were really praising JT’s spring.

Brock Holt makes the Red Sox roster, but it looks like it was a close call?

Tyler Duffey was optioned to AAA.

So I think it's just four for Opening Day: Cingrani, Chargois, Rendon, Holt. Wouldn't be surprised to see Duffey on the 25 man roster at some point. He's got options, so the Twins are going to take advantage of them.

Chargois and Cingrani both pitched perfect innings in relief of Clayton Kershaw but the Dodgers couldn't generate any offense and they lost to the Giants 1-0

I’ll see Rendon in Atlanta on Monday night.

Looking forward to see him play as I’ve actually never seen him play in person.

As someone who has seen Anthony play in person, you're in for a treat. I hope a Brave batter tries to get a hit by dropping a bunt in front of him.

Enjoy!!

Hope he and all the other Owls in pro ball have productive seasons.

Glad that both JT and Tony wound up in a place that does a good job with pitchers. Tony especially was in a tough situation in Cincy.

Tony Cingrani has been really good

Quote:So far, he’s posted a 2.57 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, 1.48 FIP, and a 0.71 expected FIP. Opponents are hitting just .160 against him. He’s faced 25 batters, and struck out 12 of them (48% strikeout rate), while walking none.

It was fun to watch Cingrani come in to relieve Alex Wood the other night, get the K, then watch Chargois come in to relieve Cingrani and finish the inning. They're both off to excellent starts. Too bad so many other Dodgers aren't.
