The field house was rocking when Ron Harper came in with Miami of OH to play against Battle and NIU

What game was it that he did his 360 dunk that they show on the opening highlights of basketball games at the convo?
Every time I see it I get so pumped!!

That game was awesome for sure. Harper was a Sr and crowned Battle his heir apparent as dominant MAC player when he graduated. Unfortunately, he transferred as we all know. The game featured Battle coming from behind and blocking a potential game winning layup at buzzer into the stands. Game went into OT. Crowd was pumped entire game. I do miss the Chick Evans games.

We need to start a petition to keep JJ at NIU. Maybe he'll reconsider his decision to leave. Of course, this is wishful thinking on my part.

. We lost a GOOD player. He started for a Big 10 bowl team. We aren't Alabama who can afford to lose solid players at the very least we need depth.

There was a Player from Penn state that was looking to use grad transfer, but ultimately decided to stay. Rumors are that Wilton speight might end up staying at Michigan too depending on the ole miss transfer. There’s not a guarantee he goes and starts at another school, but he has that at NIU. IMO he has everything to lose by transferring and more cons than pros.

Bonus points for getting away from Rod Carey.

To be fair though, Carey's staff brought him here and developed him into a stud linebacker. Big loss for us. Hopefully he still has love for the program if he makes it in the NFL.

Some loyalty.......He stated that part of the reason he left was he was upset with the MAC for not voting him first team all conference due to politics. Also I gathered and am speculating that he felt overshadowed by other players such as Sutton Smith who is getting a lot of NFL attention. Now most individuals would use these things as motivation to top their previous season and prove everyone wrong. Not JJ though.... He Would rather run from these “problems” and transfer out

He's just a kid. How many adults have left a job or a relationship looking for greener pastures? I won't begrudge him. I'm disappointed he won't see his NIU committment through, but I also won't be salty because he wants to explore his opportunities.

Maybe all student athletes should just bounce around then as the wind blows every few years, or if they don't get the accolade they're sure they deserve? 1.6 percent of college football players make it to the pro's, and the current system encourages 87.4 percent of them to be whiney primadonnas.

Accepted his offer, gobbled up free NIU tuition, basked in free NIU room and board.

Lack of loyalty and backbone. Do not wish him the best. Hope he has a good life, but no longer a fan, and hope he has ZERO athletic success in another collegiate uniform.

They need to put more reasonable limits on transfers, or ask the student athlete to refund a portion of their previous free room, tuition, board if they turn their back on the universities that moved them forward in life.

RE: Wish JJ the best
If you’re going to begrudge either Johnson or Evans you’re being salty. Both of them received their NIU degrees and ultimately that’s their commitment. Yes, they came here to play football for four years but they were also promised a degree, which they got.

Sucks to see Johnson go because he can play, but he gave as much to NIU as was required if not more. If he felt under appreciated maybe he doesn’t end up at SMU, because you would think some of that resentment would be towards Coach Kane as he was the D Coordinator, but he also maybe just didn’t mesh with Knowles.

Ultimately, I think he ends up at TCU. I think he really fits their defensive style of play and it is a true step up from NIU. SMU is not necessarily a lateral move because their league is slightly better but I don’t think their schedule is as tough as NIUs this year.

Either way each school has great academics and are great neighborhoods and universities. Best of luck, hopefully he always embraces NIU.

Side note, anyone see Shawun Lurry basically ripped NIU in an Instagram post saying god luck to JJ?

Dude, he received his degree from NIU. What more do you want. He gave four years to NIU and got his degree. He probably didn’t ask to be redshirted, so he ended up with 5 years. But he literally gave the exact commitment required of him and got exactly what NIU promised him a degree and a chance to play college football.

Pretty even trade where each person did what was asked and required.

He was a Huskie for longer than Dave Doeren or Jerry Kill was. He put in 4 years at NIU. Commitment met.

Sorry to see JJ go. He definitely would have made our D better. Mostly I'll just miss watching him play LB wearing the red and black. But he met his commitment to NIU and is doing what the rules allow him to. Cracks me up how so many guys are ticked at him for transferring, but we talk about bringing in grad transfers to play QB and other positions on this board all the time...

LOL

You guys have no idea what is going on with him to make judgment of him or his character. There is no reason for 75% of the people in this thread to bash the kid for making a decision to possibly better himself. If it ends up failing, then he has to live with it and that will be the decision he made. Like HuskieJWN said, JJ came to NIU for 4 years and is receiving his degree which is the main goal after all, right? Everything does not revolve around football.

I think I would transfer just to get to warmer weather. Lived in Illinois my entire life, and I am old, and this spring weather is brutal this year!

Agreed with your comments. I'm perplexed with his comments from the article and don't truly understand his reasoning. He was miffed because he didn't feel appreciated. But he didnt say who didnt appreciate him? his teammates or coaches or fans? I know we sang his praises on here. He was special for us and his play will be missed.
Then he praised carey and another coach so I remain confused.
