Although Gene is a bit a snake oil salesman he's absolutely right about the possibilities

This season the SEC Tourney was in St Louis. How successful was it in attendance?

Of course Gene Hallman is now showing up to start talking about this. He's ready to get his cut, of course he doesn't have any skin in the game himself

Wanna get Birmingham (or the surrounding suburbs) involved put SEC in front of it.

I don't think anyone is silly enough to think the SEC tournament will be coming to Birmingham any time soon. They already have the baseball tournament in Hoover, and SEC baseball fans love that venue because of the ample RV space, but with the corporate offices in Birmingham they don't want to appear like they're showing favoritism to this area. I don't think anyone other than media members is fooled by this.

ETA: Early rounds of the NCAA tournament is definitely doable, though.

Not that I care but the sec basketball tournament is a very real possibility from what I am told.
Birmingham is been doing the SEC favors for years including charging one dollar a month rent for their HQ. That actually pisses me off.

Hallman might be a turd it he isn’t getting a cut of anything. Can he profit from the renovations and additions? Sure he can like anyone else that has a business directly or indirectly

Birmingham owns the building where their headquarters is located?

They have rent free office space. If someone complains that they're giving Birmingham "favoritism" they can start writing a check like everyone else

It's owned by the BJCC Authority

Looks to me like the BJCC owns that building and the agreement is between the civic center and the SEC, but you're right about the $1 a year rent.

Edit: mixduptransistor was quicker than my research.

That's nice and all, but the SEC is made up of 14 athletic departments, and only 2 are in this state. The SEC very much cares what those other 12 schools think about where conference tournaments are held, and the conference does make money off those schools.

That's fine, they can start paying rent then. Honestly I couldn't care less if another SEC event never happened in the State of Alabama or anywhere on Earth

According to those numbers, UKY tournament games drew 16,000 to 18,000+ per game. What is the planned seating capacity of the Legacy Arena after renovation? That number will determine the competitive position of B'ham in regard to all such events.

Wikipedia says it seats 17,764, the BJCC website says 18,000. Either way, presumably some of those will be lost to suites. It hasn't been designed yet so no one knows the numbers. 760 seats removed for suites seems extreme, I'd wager it'll still be above 17k
