JJ transferring makes no sense. Would have been all-mac & now transferring has a lot of unknowns for him. Less & less excited for the season. The defense was going to be the reason we are competitive this season and he was our second best player behind Smith IMO

Our defense will still be good but Johnson is definitely a big loss. If he wanted to showcase himself he had a great opportunity with our tough nonconference schedule, not sure he can do better than that elsewhere.

Between Santa and now JJ we should have two schollys open. I hope we get a grad transfer at either WR and/or QB. Going to be hard to entice any grad transfer QB to come here with how bad our passing is, but one can dream.

Makes all the sense in the world. He will be Kane's right hand man and will be the leader of the defense on the field. He will be teaching his teammates the defense. If he has aspirations of coaching later in his career this is the door he has to take.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That makes great sense for Kane, but not for Johnson. I'd have to believe Johnson would like to at least get a shot at the NFL. He'd be leaving a top 20 D for one of the worst in the country. 122/132 in yards.

JJ just a football player. Will be misswd, but I believe we had a great LB recruiting class the last 2 years. Someone will step up. We have players.

No more receivers please. We only complete like 12 passes a game. Not enough to go around right now. We have tons of wr.

More than just a linebacker. He’s a NFL prospect and graded in the top 5 of linebackers in the country at the end of last season. It’s hard to replace that kind of productivity. Hopefully the other guys are ready to step up or one of the freshman will come in ready to play.

I just don’t see JJ ending up at SMU...I don’t think Kane would do that. I do see him at another noteable Texas school, or even a Oklahoma or Nebraska (he had a pick 6 against them), but not SMU.

He is projected as a 2nd or 3rd rounder I bet he is going pro.

He would have had to declare to go pro; you will likely see him on the roster of a top tier team.

Jawuan Johnson on his decision to become a graduate transfer: "Its a decision for me. I'll forever keep in touch with Huskie nation. To the NIU fans, it's nothing but love and always will be love. I appreciate NIU with all my heart. They gave me my opportunity to be great."

More JJ: "I'm gonna miss being in that locker room everyday with my guys Shawun, Bobby, Kyle, AB, Sutton – everyone. Grinding with them was the best part of my days in DeKalb. I'll always have NIU in my heart."

If he loved those guys so much why is he leaving? He would've improved his draft stock with another big year.

This really stinks. The grad transfer rule will continue to hurt us. Who will be next? I think this will only increase unfortunately. I don't know where he plans to go. Typically I would say this would be a good decision for exposure since playing in the MAC typically hurts your draft stock because of the competition. However our OOC schedule this year give plenty of opportunity to showcase your talent. I would also say good decision if you plan on studying something that isn't offered here but I don't think that will be the case. I don't question his love for the team either. This is typically a business decision but I'll wait to see where he goes since this of all years would be perfect for exposure here.

RE: 2018 Spring Roster is up
This leaves LB paper thin. There's 8 listed on the spring roster. They've carried 14 on average the last 5 years. The majority of LB recruits from the last 3 years have been moved to new positions. Right now of the 8 there's 4 R-Fr and 1 R-So. I'm guessing some true freshman are active this year. God help us if Pugh goes down.

RE: 2018 Spring Roster is up
Does indeed s*ck. On his draft stock, I certainly get that playing in the MAC doesn't help, but man, seems like a risk to go join a team/potentially system that is brand new to him ,maybe he hits it bigger, but it's a dice roll in my opinion. He was already seen as a quality LB at NIU, knew the system, could have piled up stats and film this season. It's an interesting choice, kids have to do what they think is best for them, so I wish him the best, but seems odd if his mind is on the NFL.

He sent his release to Texas Christian, Southern Methodist and Baylor. His goal is to move closer to home in Texas. I still think his timing for moving close to home is silly. Maybe there’s some family health stuff going on. That’s the only thing that would make sense. There’s no guarantee that he will start at any of those schools.
