South Korean deal on tariffs
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/26/busin...riffs.html

"...In a statement published on Monday, the South Korean Trade Ministry said it had agreed to adhere to a quota of 2.68 million tons of steel exports to the United States a year, which it said was roughly equivalent to 70 percent of its annual average sale to the United States from 2015 to 2017. It also agreed to lower trade barriers to autos imported from the United States. Trump administration officials cited what they considered unfair barriers against American-made cars when they began to pressure South Korea last year to amend the trade pact.
In return, the Trade Ministry said, South Korea would be exempt from the steel tariffs...."

Hmmmm Take a strong position in trade negotiations and end up with a better trade deal.

President Trump was never going to just blindly slap everyone with tariffs, but rather use them as a bargaining chip to get these countries to the table. I think the market got the picture today.

If we can do the same with China (and I think we can, they're already backing down), look out.

which I why I was giving him the benefit of the doubt on that one....

still doesn't change how it will impact consumer goods moving forward.....as a simple example, the price of gas went up 0.10/gal here yesterday....what was so special about yesterday? oh yeah, those speculators and 'spring demand' (chuckles)

having said that, I've always thought the 2.00 - 2.50/gal range is a fair number in today's economy....

And it's been a painfully long time since someone in the White House got this... I don't think any president in my life has been willing to play rough on trade.

They all started with the opening position: We really want bi lateral free trade but if you tariff us and protect your markets, that's ok too.

We are the largest market in the world by far. We should be setting the rules instead of playing footstool.

Exactly.

We are in the position of strength and it's high time someone in charge started acting like it.
