I worked with him some at the School Board, and was always impressed with how he can cut through nonsense at a School Board meeting. Seems he hasn't lost that skill.

From what I read, it sounded like a great speech.
Props to him on that.

Strange how everyone else had a chance to review the proposal enough except for O'Quinn.

Although most of us here agree the choice to build a new stadium and renovate the BJCC should be an obvious one, I think there were some who wanted to discuss things reasonably. I think creating the neighborhood revitalization fund should be a great compromise for those expressing concerns. Those trying to make it about race and just flat out being nasty have no place in political office. Congratulations to the mayor for standing firm. I think history will bear witness to the wisdom of this path.

I was very impressed by how Hilliard stated things very logically and baldly. Build it and expand the city's footprint or get left even further behind. He stared his black constituents in the eye and said "This needs to be done. I know you don't like how the medicine tastes, but it will make you get better." Everyone can't get everything they want. I think that the Mayor played things very shrewdly the last couple of days as well.

He was VERY eloquent in his understated way. I was most proud of him and the way he conducted himself.

Impressed with Birmingham's new mayor. He had the old forces of negativity and division in his face and he stared them down.
A great day for the whole greater Birmingham area. Bham, Jeffco, State Legislators, UAB, business leaders all working together for the common good. Maybe a road map for a new way forward in central Alabama.
Go Blazers!

Woodfin did a very good job with this. He was fired upon from many sides and had his political career threatened and above it all remained calm and well-reasoned.

The Birmingham City Council, after almost endless debate, approved (6-3) the city's share of funding for the new stadium and BJCC upgrades (including bringing Legacy Arena up to NBA standards)
It took 18 years, but the project is now completely approved!

This is why the Baton need to be passed...to the future leaders, to those who look at historical legion field and see a old facility and not a historical building. Way to go Birmingham.

Folks, gotta say that you're not giving Darrell a fair shake. He was open to it (unlike Scales, who was adamantly against it), but wasn't provided with enough info and guarantees.
Be disappointed. I get that. But please don't attack his character or competence based on one issue. Looking at you fatkid and blazerman.

I think I'm gonna faint. Is that actual logical thinking? I haven't seen it on this board in ages...

I don’t claim to know Darrell on a personal level. But I will say that a lot of what is wrong with Birmingham is people who are “open to” things but to afraid to act or make a difficult decision.

He knew he wasn't going to vote for it yesterday, and apparently enough people knew about how he was going to vote that this thread was started. I don't believe he was open to it at all.

Not attacking his character, but it is absolutely fair to question his competence.
This was not a tough vote. He voted against the best interests of his city, his district, and UAB. He will be held accountable for it.

What's next? I'm guessing we'll get a big announcement involving all the contributing parties. Can't get here soon enough.
