RE: App State making an mockery of the Sun Belt
We were six outs away, then Cobb hired a former buddy to be the coach and he was a failure only surpassed by his basketball hire of Capel.

Weather is a big issue, but Pollard put together a good stretch that peaked with the 41-18 season in 2012 and then took off for Duke. It was only the second 40 win season (1986) in school history. Prior to Pollard's hiring we App Fans endured 18 years of pitiful baseball averaging 19 wins. Many long time Yosef Club donors, including some baseball alumni, were thinking it was time to end the misery. Adding to the weather issues, we were not even funding the program at a DII level. Giving the equivalent of 2 scholarships and the budget was so bad the kids were playing in patched up uniforms, using old equipment and rationing balls. Player's Moms made sandwiches for the team because the AD wouldn't give them enough money to buy lunch between double headers. Some folks were so embarrassed they started grilling burgers & hotdogs for the guys before games. The program was a complete joke. Jim Smith and Don Beaver convinced the new administration to pump some life into the program and agreed to fund a new ballpark. Pollard came in and started slow but really had the program on the best footing it had ever been on. Then Cobb destroyed every bit of the momentum Pollard had built by hiring an old buddy from his days at NC State. Doug Gillin is trying to turn things around and is funding the program at least at an appropriate DI level. I have no doubt Kermit can get the job done, he just needs some time and some cooperation from weather, which seems to run in cycles. Kermit has some good ideas on things that can be done to enhance Smith Stadium (which was built on a shoestring budget), but it takes money. They were some upgrades to the clubhouse and indoor hitting / pitching facility in the off season, but a lot more is needed to bring it up to Sunbelt standards.

In retrospect, Jones was obviously a bad hire, but when it was announced, I seem to remember most people thinking Cobb had done a good job with this one. It was a different situation than the Capel issue. At least Jones had a resume with some very good programs. Turns out that he couldn't actually run a team though, unfortunately.
