RE: SB Nation NIU Football scouting report
Good write-up. Getting my season tickets to help the cause. Hope to come up for the Utah game, and will be going to Tallahassee for the FSU game.
No conflicts now that my daughter decided against going there and will attending UCF.

Did all the tv time, hype and news around UCF with football sway your daughters decision? Or had she decided before?

She's not a football geek like me, so that didn't weigh in n the decision.
I actually loathe FSU, what with the stupid chant and arrogant attitude. I had to make a quick 4th quarter exit during the Orange Bowl after we got that third quarter TD and on-side kick. The FSU people around me had been talking smack the whole game, so I started giving it back. Then the 4th quarter happened.
I have another daughter at FIU, which is investing big into their program, but it hasn't paid off, yet. You may see them on the radar soon.
She plans on going into dentistry, and UCF has a good program, plus it's about 4 hours closer to home. FSU has the booze/party culture which I wasn't thrilled about. (Not that I partook when I was at NIU)
I didn't know until recently that UCF is the largest university in the country.

My oldest was accepted at FSU and UCF. Made the trek from S Fl up to Tallahassee three times for different auditions for the Performing Arts Department. Really liked tha campus, faculty, and got a better family type vibe there. While FSU had a beer/frat boy vibe, UCF seemed to have more of a druggie vibe to it. Didn't like the UCF faculty I had contact compared to those at FSU. Didn't matter in the end, FAU came up with more scholarship $$$. The daughter was very happy with her experience as an Owl. The opportunity to earn decent money while going to FAU was better in Boca than UCF or UCF.

FAU has nice facilities and their football program is on the rise.
I went there for the one-of-many NIU bowls loses. We got spanked by Marshall in that one.

Just wanted to add my $.02, since I am familiar with both campuses and my daughter is doing the college tours now. UCF, and USF, still feel more like commuter schools than actual universities. However, it is tough since almost everything built in Florida is newer. I think you are spot on in your analysis of the cultures. FSU is more of a true college experience, and has a well earned reputation as a party school. Fans at all big universities have their bad apples, but we are a confident bunch and enjoy the success we have had in athletics, maybe too much.
I was REALLY impressed however with FAU. Just did the tour there a couple weeks ago and really like everything they are doing. They have a lot of Office Depot money coming in for the business school and the on campus stadium is pretty amazing. Everything was new, and they seem to be building a real strong identity there. Not to mention the beach is less than a mile away. I would probably be VERY interested in attending there now if I was making a college decision.
We went to University of Miami that same week, and that campus just looks tired and definitely not great. I know the school has great academics, but ugh, not to mention they play their football games over an hour away from campus.

Ugh, just had to mention that, didn't you? Still waiting for spring here. Not too bad during the day but still a mite chilly at night.
I can honestly say I don't mind the chant that FSU does. Wish we had more people that got into the games that much instead of sitting on their hands (well, our fans at the Orange Bowl obviously weren't doing that, but, home games I mean). I sat in an NIU section though so didn't deal with many FSU fans.
