Big surprise to me. But, you have to hand it to AF.
The absolute reality is that there is not an enormous difference between teams who get to the NCAA's. The focus should be to get there as often as possible.
As for the Minnesota State/Minnesota Duluth game, those two teams were evenly matched. Minn St is a very good team, and we all know how good Duluth is. Michigan Tech took Notre Dame to OT, and after the game the Notre Dame captain said they lucked out to win, as Tech had a great opportunity just before the Irish scored. That is hockey.
College hockey has more parity, from the top team to the bottom, than any sport at any level. Those "laughing-stock" leagues and teams are very good too, and only folks who don't really understand college hockey will say otherwise. The real difference between the haves and the have-nots in college hockey is the consistency and consistent support of the programs. A league like WCHA will have three or four teams having a good year, but those teams will vary from year. Those top WCHA teams though will be quite good, and the best teams among that group each year will be able to play with the teams who make the NCAA from other conferences. The NCHC, on the other hand, has far more depth as a conference, and even teams near the bottom of the nchc any given season will be able to compete with anyone in the country. This is because the nchc consists mostly of "hockey schools" with very strong hockey programs. Only because they are in the nchc are those teams "bottom feeders", for lack of a better term. But that all doesn't matter at the end of the season. The bottom teams in both leagues stay home for the NCAA tournament. And the teams from both leagues who do make the tournament have as legitimate chance of making a run as any other team.
So, again, the goal each season should be to get to the NCAA tournament. While the nchc may get twice as may teams as the WCHC in the tournament, I still think it is easier most years to get one of the two WCHA spots than one of the four NCHC spots.
