RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
Everybody is on campus, so barring some last minute transfer or 2018 commit, we'll be playing the 18-19 season with only 11 scholarship players. Rotation is gonna be a big question mark. I think Moore will either be the starting 1 or will backup Ako. Parrish seems a lock to start, and I would think Jack Williams will be too. Wouldn't be surprised to see Dylan starting at the 5, but hoping QMB shows enough in preseason because we need his paint presence.

Hopefully one or two of Mullins, Murphy, Peterson, Rob, and Tim makes a big leap.

Addison Owen and Oliver Xu are on the roster. Owen needs to be on scholarship by now - he would get a D1 scholarship somewhere if he wanted to transfer. Xu was a walk-on two years ago and also is okay as a 12 or 13th player off the bench.

Adams is the starter at the point guard. We'll likely have a true freshman shooting guard unless Parrish is considered to be that position (I'm not sure if he's a 2 or a 3).

The 4 and 5 options are intriguing. Williams is probably one of the two and I'm still going to say like I've said for almost two years now that Harrison has the ability to be a factor in the post. But Dylan Jones, Robert Martin, and then the two freshmen (QMB and Peterson) probably gives us more depth in the frontcourt than we've had in a few years.

To me the bigger issue is our lack of experience in the backcourt (outside of Adams). If 1 or 2 freshmen among the 3M's (Moore, Mullins and Murphy) can impact the season like Marcus Evans did as a freshman, then we'll be okay. But that's a huge if, and probably is an unrealistic thing to hope for.

Xu is actually a decent player. Not a bench option, unless we're in desperate need (I think he played a couple minutes under Rhoades) but he's good enough to test the guys in practice. I've heard the staff really likes Moore, enough that he might push for a starting role. And Peterson, at least in his current form, is more a guard than a forward. He's way more comfortable shooting from 25 feet than 10 feet. I really think our only true frontcourt options are Tim + Jack (both more stretch bigs) and Dylan + QMB.

In an odd sense, should be a fun first couple of months. Kind of a cool experience looking at a really unknown roster and watching guys develop/evolve. The Spain trip should also really help, I'd think.

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
Which two on the roster are not scholarship?

Also, wow..... Iirc the typical roster size for a D1 Men's Program is 16-18; we are bringing 13 to the party..... (sigh)

If this is replicated next year, one really should think about the efficacy of Pera.

edited to add : nvm. seems the power schools run 16-18, the TCUs run about 14-15, and the UTEPs and Rices max out around 13.

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
I doubt the 'power schools' run 16-18 anymore. Maybe they used to before the rash of transfers took over college basketball. 13 scholarships is the max for D1 basketball and my guess is that 12 or 13 is your average roster size period.

Xu and Owen are walk-ons but one or both may be on scholarship this year.

Michigan runs 18 --- they were one of the schools I looked up as I typed the initial statement.

Initially my reaction to your post was "who are all these guys?" Hard to keep up with all the extreme roster turnover, makes rooting for revolving door players difficult sometimes. Hope we can stabilize things and catch lightning in a bottle at some point. Any of the new freshman grown a foot over the summer (he says hopefully?)

Remember when Demarcus Cousins had Rice among his top choices, somewhere along the lines of committing to UAB, then Memphis and eventually Kentucky, when Calipari moved.

He might have taken a visit to Rice, IIRC.

RE: 2018-19 Men's Basketball Roster
So here is the latest D-1 College Transfer update: as of July 5, there are 735 D-1 hoops players who have announced their intention to transfer from their current program. of the 735, 222 have not yet been signed by another program, of which 47 of these players have immediate eligibility and could play during the 2018/19 season.

It seems to me that if Rice wanted to, they could sign at least one more graduate transfer and one other transfer, assuming that they were academically qualified and could positively impact the program from this pool. Even if we assume that 2/3 of the 222 are not academically qualified, that leaves more than 70 transfer candidates. In the case of the graduate transfers, the % qualified would likely be larger because the player has already demonstrated that he can complete their academic degree program at their current school.

Maybe none of them are any good, they have poor academics, or they do not want to come to Rice. I think we have enough mediocre players to take anybody available. Will we have double digit wins in 2018? I have a feeling we will because we will probably be playing a lot of powder puff schools before conference play like in the second year of Rhoades.

Interestingly, there are at least 4 guys from that group that had Rice offers out of high school: Justin Moore (Georgia Tech), Donovan Mitchell (Wake Forest), Nolan Taylor (Pepperdine), and ... Amir Smith (Rice, juco, FAU). There are a number of other transfers that are either transferring out of good academic schools, or had offers from non-Rice academic schools out of high school.

That’s really intriguing. Institutions with very good academics. Previous Rice offer. Obvious experience at good basketball schools. We are in dire need of experienced players. I think we may have some scholarship support for this season.
Somebody needs to drop a dime and contact some or all of these guys.

Mike Wilkes played several seasons in NBA. I would guess Egor is at least as good as he was. Sure, they will discount a former Rice player, but he also is a former Florida player and a former Az player as well, so there's that. Ego5r seemed like a good guy, and seemed to enjoy the game. He got his degree and made a business decision. Good for him. I wish him well. I think he'll do fine. Would love to have him back as a former player/coach in training some day. I liked his hustle.

I don't feel like looking for the old thread on the basketball schedule but we will be playing in one of those round-robin tournaments with UH, BYU, Northwestern State and Alabama A&M next season --- https://www.bloggingthebracket.com/2017/...anksgiving -- which will be called the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic.

We play at UH and at BYU (11/21). I'm assuming we will host Northwestern State (whom we beat on the road last year) and Alabama A&M. We'll win the 2 home games and lose the 2 road games.

Kind of a cool honor. Still amazing that Belmont has consistently maintained the spot of best academic basketball school in the country. Always competitive on the court, play a really fun style of basketball, and always one of the smartest teams off the court. And rarely any transfers.
