In the 1990s, Character Matters...Not so Much Today...
Removing pragmatism from the equation, GOP members who have cried over Clinton's affairs and telling us that character matters back then...appear to be generally OK with it today. Why doesn't character count today? Mike Pence is firmly entrenched in the Evangelical Voter camp. Why isn't he resigning? Bigger question, why isn't the Religious Right demanding Trump resign? Food for thought.

The right conclusion to draw is that you just can’t explain the thing.

I think the answer traces back to the early to mid 80s when we all found out for a fact that Trump is a womanizer. over the ensuing 30 years, he did nothing but reinforce that notion. Therefore, it has already been taken into account. Whether or not he slept with some porn star while he was a married private citizen would not be surprising because it has always been part of his character. If he did it while president and then tried to hide it, thus opening himself up to blackmail, or if he was trying to pass himself off as a moral standard bearer, then it might bother me a bit, but I really couldn't care less whether or not he slept with this Stormy Daniels 12 years ago. The religious right won't ask him to resign because, in spite of his moral lacking, he is pursuing policy that mosly aligns with what they want. The alternative would be to vote for someone like Obama who perhaps never cheated on his wife, but pursues policies that soil traditional values.

Because both he and the Religious Right knew what they were getting when they decided to support him. They weren't about to let perfect get in the way of good, and in the general election the alternative was a hell of a lot worse.

There are several things:
1) We already knew;
2) He didn't do it in the White House;
3) A lot of Republicans are critical of him and I haven't heard any defend his behavior as the Democrats did Clinton;
4) The alternative-the Hillary Party-is completely morally bankrupt; and
5) For a substantial number, James Carville was right. Its the economy, stupid.
6) Moral standards in this country have declined significantly since the 90s.

This is pretty spot on. This kind of crap, running around on wives, was already known and baked in.
One would have to be 18 and voting for the first time, or in a lengthy coma to not know Trump had an *ahem* wandering eye.
That’s one thing, we’ve all known these people personally. Difference to this point, so far, is he isn’t schtooping a chubby teenage intern in the Oval Office.
Might be a matter of style points to some, for me it makes a difference.

That's because the religious right are pragmatists at heart - at least today. They'll find their "religion" when the GOP is out of power. At least wrt to the GOP, conservatism is going into hibernation for a period of time. Cynically speaking, The GOP will find their conservative roots when they are out of power in the house, senate and possibly even the presidency too.
Donald Trump is a 60's or 70's style Democrat who is now the head of the party. Ironic, isn't it?

There are no true conservatives elected officials in Washington today. Rand Paul is practically an anarchist as he doesn't support any government.
The next time we are represented by a true conservative will be after the revolution.

Not ironic, fact. The republicans ARE 70's dem's and the dem's are marxist/socialists.

Clinton was a rapist not banging a porn star. If people can't see the difference they can't be helped
