baseball at FAU
http://www.fausports.com/sports/m-basebl...18aaa.html

from FAU link above:
The Friday night matchup, beginning at 6:30 p.m (eastern time)., features two of the top aces in C-USA. The Owls will start Jake Miednik (4-1, 1.95 ERA), tied for the league lead in wins, and ranking sixth in ERA and third in strikeouts with 41, against USM’s Nick Sandlin (3-0, 1.32), fourth in wins, fourth in ERA, and first with 55 strikeouts. Sandlin was voted Preseason C-USA Pitcher of the Year, coming off a year in which he was the Golden Eagles’ closer. Sophomore Matt Wallner was named Preseason C-USA Player of the Year, but ironically now is the team’s closer in addition to batting .313 with three home runs and 15 RBI.

Here are the probable starting matchups for the three-game set: **all times listed are eastern as this is their game preview**

Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Owls – Senior LHP Miednik vs. Golden Eagles – Junior RHP Sandlin
Saturday, 4 p.m.: Owls – Senior RHP Mark Nowatnick (1-1, 3.18 ERA in eight relief appearances) vs. Golden Eagles – Junior LHP Stevie Powers (2-0, 3.38 ERA)
Sunday, 12 p.m.: Owls – Junior RHP Vince Coletti (1-1, 2.05 ERA) vs. Golden Eagles – Sophomore RHP Walker Powell (1-1, 3.50 ERA)

RE: baseball at FAU
Def need 2/3 this weekend. At face, it seems a little scary and tough. Fau is #11 rpi with a good record. But look a little deeper and its not so bad. Rpi doesn't mean **** right now. All sorts of teams have inflated rpis and vice versa at this point. Secondly, take a look at their competiton sor far. They have only beaten two teams with a winning record. They lost 3/4 to oregon and won 3/3 to delaware. Nothing impressive about that. Heck, everyone else they played has a losing record (minus the FL game).

This is a very big series, but we should beat their unproven asses from what ive seen of our team so far. Of course, we shoulda swept tn-martin and won our regional last year, just like VA shoulda beat the #16 seed team in basketball last week. So we will see how it goes.

Those are def good numbers from their closer. Ill only be concerned if we see him. We will likely only see him if we are losing come the 8th or 9th inning. Hopefully we will be ahead and won't have to face him. Their staff hasnt faced a team (in a series) that hits as good as ours, so i like our chances.

3 strikeouts in 8+ innings from a stopper? Meh. He’s no Cameron Ragsdale (2016 Ragsdale, not 2017).

So their usual Saturday guy is out. Marman had a 1.45 ERA/1.00 WHIP. 4/46 BB/K ratio in 31 innings.

Couple blurbs on the game from national media:

http://www.fausports.com/sports/m-basebl...mcume.html

Battle of the Birds of Prey in Boca Raton. If you look solely at the RPI rankings, then this is a series between the No. 46 Eagles and the No. 11 Owls. USM made national headlines by sweeping Mississippi State on opening weekend and is also now in the midst of a seven-game win streak heading into the second week of Conference USA play. The Owls are coming off a scintillating comeback win at Miami on Wednesday night, capped by a ninth-inning grand slam by Eric Rivera.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/...-and-more/

Southern Miss last year dominated Conference USA, going 25-5 and winning the league by six games over Old Dominion and seven over FAU. ODU was the lone team last year to win a conference series against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles swept the Owls in Hattiesburg last year and if FAU is to this year challenge Southern Miss for the league title, it must make a statement this weekend at home, where it is 12-0 this season.

Nick Sandlin’s move to the rotation was made possible in part by Matt Wallner’s return to the mound after a hip injury kept him from pitching down the stretch last season. The sophomore two-way star has been excellent on the mound this season, going 1-0, 1.59 with three saves in four appearnaces this year, but the Golden Eagles still have to find a way to get him the ball in close games. Southern Miss hasn’t played many of those this season, but middle relief is not the team’s strength. Junior righthander J.C. Keys stepped up to throw 3.1 important innings last Saturday in a 4-3 victory against Texas-San Antonio, an encouraging sign after a slow start to the season. The Golden Eagles will likely need more performances like that throughout the season.

FAU has won eight of its last nine games since it lost a series at Oregon and its offense has been impressive during that run. The Owls are averaging 9.33 runs per game over the last nine games and have scored double-digit runs seven times. FAU’s hot bats will be tested this weekend, but they could turn the series into a slugfest.

3 of the 5 D1 guys picked us to the win the series.

I have Sandlin throwing 26 pitches that inning.

Sidenote, I gotta add "[insert team] is [insert number] in the stolen base department" to the Cox bingo sheet.

all I know is it's 2 solo shots to 1 solo shot.....good guys are up 2-1 going into b5....

with Sandlin's delivery, he can toss 110 w/o a problem....the only question do they pick it up or does he start to miss the mark....
