Penny was on Clay Travis Today (3/23/18)
Penny - who takes his PR responsibility seriously - was on the Clay Travis program this morning. I do not have time to transcibe the entire wide ranging interview, but here are a few highlights:

1. He considered Ark and GA Tech during his recruitment, but the love and pull of home kept him home.

2. Kids tell him they like him in the movie Blue Chips (my aside - helps recruiting).

3. His favorite time as a player was our 1991-1992 Elite Eight run.

4. Penny’s first priority is recruiting 2018 uncommitted kids (mentioned Atlanta, I think).

5. He has exchanged texts with Pastner and Calipari.

6. On offense, he plans “running and gunning” offense with dunks and lobs.

7. On defense, he wants to “get after it” with trapping (like West Virginia).

The interview in its entirety should be available via Outkick the Coverage podcast.

thanks

Blue Chips remains a classic

regarding #1, I think most "crystal balls" back then had Penny as an Arkansas lock / heavy lean up until the 12th hour....I still remember the day of his announcement and all the tv channels with the breaking news stories

I really like the style of play Penny envisions. It is fun to watch and I think elite recruits like it.

RE: Penny was on Clay Travis Today (3/23/18)
I want to get back to a focus on defense like we did under Cal. We had one or two decent defensive teams since then but nothing like the Calipari teams.

A smothering defense that ignites our transition offense and lets us highlight our athleticism. Run and gun off our defensive pressure.

We also need to find a few bigs who are true shot blockers to anchor our defense. If we can't land elite big men, then we need to take guys that are high 3, lower 4 stars and develop them.

NO MORE SMALL BALL MEMPHIS STYLE CRAP, find and develop a few bigs who we can keep on the floor and can play defense. I'm sick and tired of tiger teams who don't have a true center or shot blocker in the middle. By the time Pastner finally got a few bigs, the guard talent had dropped off a cliff.

Guard and wing talent should always be in abundance for the tigers, the key is finding a few bigs that can defend and stay on the floor. When we have a few true bigs, we are usually a final 4 caliber team.

Looks like a winner to me. And we have a nice little pipeline into Georgia the last several years. 04-cheers

RE: Penny was on Clay Travis Today (3/23/18)
There are a lot of P5 programs that take 3 star caliber bigs and develop them into really good players. I'm not saying we can't land high 4 and 5 star bigs, Penny will land some. But we also need to get better at landing and developing bigs who aren't one and done type talents.

We are known as a guard school, so bigs traditionally are afraid they will get lot in the shuffle here or not get the right opportunities to shine. That perception needs to change. Other programs use that against us in recruiting, and the numbers often back them up.

Don't show that to TOGC.

I've heard Penny mention Atlanta about 3 times now. Has to be a shout-out to specific recruits. Sounds like both Hagans and Montgomery.

I think penny is trying to immediately gauge where he stands on high level recruits outside the area. This is fun.

I watched big ole Kentucky lose to a very small lineup of tough as nails guards from KSU. Of course I would love some good big guys but you can win it all with great guards and average big guys

Cal plays that aggressive man-to-man as well as anyone does. He uses their typically superior length and athleticism to his advantage.

However, Cal is too one-dimensional on D. He plays more zone these days than when he was here, but still not enough. He doesn't change things up enough and that's why he runs into match-up problems with disciplined shooting teams. Rumor is, Cal doesn't like zone because he has never been a good teacher of it.

I like aggressive man, but we need to have other tools in the kit.

Great gold courses.

If you mean golf course, he hasn't played in months.

If you mean gold club, that's the Georgetown coach you're thinking about.

Wolken should probably delete his twitter after today. What a joke that story was. And to find out he was back channeling with Currie the whole time? Wow.

How is that a fraud?

First, the article was still on point.

Secondly, I'm betting every writer does a solid to coaches/players/admins every here and there. Silly not to think that. They all have a symbiotic relationship.

Ask the other guy, I didn't say it was.

You were objecting to it too--calling it a joke.

I could see if the article praised Currie or embellished Sciano or did something like that, but the story would have been written by others (and was) anyway.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/co...896397001/

When word began to leak that Florida’s search had targeted Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen and that Tennessee was trying to work out a deal with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, the backlash was swift and severe. In Tennessee's case, the backlash ended up scuttling the deal. Tennessee had to back off.

On point.

Though Florida’s fan base merely was disappointed at the idea of a coach with a career 33-39 record in the SEC, Tennessee’s was apoplectic in a manner that was unprecedented, undeserved and arguably frightening.

Yep.

But first let’s examine the meltdown at Tennessee, a fan base that has been fed a fantasy for months (and even years) by some local media members that ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden had an interest in coaching their program. There was nothing in the realm of reality to support that idea, putting athletics director John Currie in a terrible spot of hiring a coach who wouldn’t be Gruden and thus disappointing Vol Nation.

True

Moreover, Vols fans had almost no sense of the attractiveness of their job or the competitive marketplace for head coaching hires. Tennessee is a good job and can be a very good program, but it’s not the kind of place where successful sitting head coaches in comfortable situations uproot their lives.

Anyone, besides delusional Vols fans, disagree with that?

Thus, Currie — an athletics director who values stability and experience, who doesn’t get starry-eyed about the next great thing — had limited choices. When it was impossible to get around the $9 million buyout for Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and when Mullen became a real candidate at Florida, his options were further reduced.

Seems correct. (and after the fact we know it to be the case)

Schiano, 51, worked a miracle at Rutgers. He made a dead-end program relevant, got to six bowl games in his last seven seasons and made the program attractive enough that it was acceptable to join the Big Ten. Over the years, he had been pursued by several big-time jobs but stayed at Rutgers until the end of 2011 when he took the plunge to go to the NFL.

Maybe some opinion, but otherwise factual.

And I could go on...

I said he should delete his twitter cause he's being destroyed by Clay's base. The fact that he sold his story asunbiased while he was telling Currie he'd run with his agenda is surprising. Hence my, "wow." Don't be such a try hard, lol.
