1. He considered Ark and GA Tech during his recruitment, but the love and pull of home kept him home.

2. Kids tell him they like him in the movie Blue Chips (my aside - helps recruiting).

3. His favorite time as a player was our 1992-1993 Elite Eight run.

4. Penny’s first priority is recruiting 2018 uncommitted kids (mentioned Atlanta, I think).

5. He has exchanged texts with Pastner and Calipari.

6. On offense, he plans “running and gunning” offense with dunks and lobs.

7. On defense, he wants to “get after it” with trapping (like West Virginia).

The interview in its entirety should be available via Outkick the Coverage podcast.

1991-1992 was the Elite 8

1992-1993 was a first round loss

Back to the larger point, I'm glad Penny is doing a full out media blitz, the more press, the better.

This is exciting.

Wolken should probably delete his twitter after today. What a joke that story was. And to find out he was back channeling with Currie the whole time? Wow.

How is that a fraud?

First, the article was still on point.

Secondly, I'm betting every writer does a solid to coaches/players/admins every here and there. Silly not to think that. They all have a symbiotic relationship.

Wolken roasted Freeze for using friendly media to push his agenda. Now it comes out that he’s willingly being used to push an ADs agenda ... its discredits him as a journalist IMO. Hard to believe he can be unbiased when he tells the AD “I’ll help”.

He acts like he’s above it all. He’s just like the others.

We are known as a guard school, so bigs traditionally are afraid they will get lot in the shuffle here or not get the right opportunities to shine. That perception needs to change. Other programs use that against us in recruiting, and the numbers often back them up.

With respect to your first paragraph, I would prefer to get a 5 star post player this year. If we do, and he goes pro after one year, that will be fine. We will have plenty of post players to replace him with next year just from the East HS roster alone.

Or he could think that Schiano was a good hire. If he thought Schiano was a terrible hire and agreed to help Currie with it that's an entirely different thing.

“I’ll help” isn’t really the media’s job. I get that it happens, but when Dan goes out of his way to make fun of other schools/coaches for doing the same thing...it’s kinda funny.

Can someone cliffnotes what Wolken did please? I read some 24/7 article about it but didn’t see anything about him in the discussions they posted from John Currie

Quote:Here’s Currie’s exchange with Dan Wolken of USA Today, who that day was the first to report Tennessee was closing in on Schiano. Currie forwards Wolken a message from a fan blasting him for the hire, and tells Wolken, “Gonna need some help on the PR. Our people are wacko.”

Wolken replies, “I’ll help. Not sure they’ll listen. LOL. I know he’s a very good coach and is about the right stuff.”

Later that day—before the offer to Schiano was withdrawn—Wolken wrote a column criticizing UT fans for their “meltdown,” and arguing that their anger was actually based on a mistaken belief that their program could land a better hire than Schiano, rather than in outrage over the Penn State allegation.

Wolken declined to comment for this story, but he certainly wasn’t being duplicitous here. He’s a fan of Schiano and has been for a long time and genuinely believed this would have been a good hire, or at least the best UT could have hoped for. He also appears to believe McQueary’s allegation had no merit. Nothing he said to Currie in this exchange conflicts with what he’s written publicly. That’s fine, even if just about any reporter has had exchanges with friendly sources that would be mortifying if they were made public. (It’s really interesting, though. This is how your scoop sausage is made.)

He was the beat writer. Sometimes you are asked to sit on a story if it's a little sensitive. He could have written about it and maybe messed up the transfer. If he did his future access would be more limited. Quid pro quo.

I remember Dana said during his hire presser that he plays "run and make it". Exciting times ahead again.

Apparently he declined to comment on this because it was an off the record convo. So he believes in the idea of on/off the record, but not the idea that a journalist should never under any circumstance agree to a source’s request for PR help. Well OK then.

I think every tiger fan on the planet earth would rather get a 5-star post player this year. 04-cheers
