Jesus... given that our strategy for next year was seemingly entirely predicated on talent improving... we are likely royally ******.

Lulz. Karlgaard should’ve actually conducted a real coaching search?

But that's only 5 yards and automatic first down.

Bad joke.. but it's about what's keeping me from opening the emergency exit and jumping out right now

I’m kinda intrigued how we’re going to fill out a roster. In a watching a train wreck kind of way. We’ll probably have more threads like this...

Walt was this tweet nice and personal enough for you? All these guys love Rice and their teammates and their coaches....

Well, I guess that pretty much cements NCAA *basketball* on the list of college sports I'll avoid watching for moral reasons

Not Karlgaard's fault. This is the environment nowadays in college basketball. No loyalty to school. No one willing to tough it out.

It is. Wait to see what’s next.

Poor due diligence in terms of making hires.

So shouldn't he have taken this environment into account when looking for a coach and realized that basing a hiring decision, in part, on retaining players is a poor decision? Because that's what happened.

In an environment where over 800 D1 players a year are transferring, saying "it's Karlgaard's fault" everytime a Rice player leaves is more than simplistic.

Some of you hypercritical people should save some criticisms because I can almost assure you we'll be having this conversation again before the offseason is over.

I'm not saying it doesn't suck or that all of this isn't disappointing, but I'm not really sure people here understand how difficult Pera's situation was when he took this job in terms of personnel. Criticize his coaching or game management, but no exaggeration, I'm not sure he could have recruited 2017 and 2018 better. It just happens that we're in an era where a place like Rice is essentially a junior college for recruits. I get and agree with recruiting kids who want to be at Rice because of the academics/degree, and I hope that's the case with the 2018 class, but that was basically impossible to do with the 2017 class.

Mmmhmm, because even in this hypertransferic (new word I made up) environment, the volume of transfers amounts to > or equal to 2/3 of a signing class?

I haven't seen anything on Austin Meyer yet, but one of the players told me Tuesday night that he was leaving. I heard later on that one of our better players parents were meeting with the coaches that night. Guess it was Osborne.

The average is over two per school including the schools players want to be at, and Rice is not one of those.

My issue is I did not, have not and still do not think Pera will lead Rice to the promised land or anywhere close. I also feel the hire was an oh-**** move as opposed to the methodical approach we have seen with other hires. This coupled with the last season (which was a disaster) has made me less than happy with JKs handling of the MBB situation. Throw in these transfers.. which basically guarantees a disaster 2018.. I'm even less happy.

Do you feel that MBB is on the right trajectory with the new regime? Even before this? Now add this in.

I think Pera was put in an awful situation by Rhoades and the type of player he recruited. By the time he took over I was shocked he got Hunter and Osborne.

It’s unfortunate he couldn’t convince them to stay but I blame the guys mostly. They clearly think they’re too good for Rice. Lester’s “year 1 highlights” gave me a good laugh.

Think it only gets tougher from here though. Not sure what is expected of next season once this all shakes out but it probably won’t be pretty.
