An era is over
What has been rumors over the weekend at St Pete is now official.

Starting in 2019 EVERY practice session, time trial and RACE on the Indy Car series will be on the NBC family of networks.

INCLUDING FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER THE 103rd INDY 500.

For 54 years ABC has been the only network to telecast the Indy 500 on national TV. That comes to an end in May of 2019.

NBC will air next year's Indy 500 with all the other races, testing and time trials on NBCSN.

Basically a trade since F1 left NBC this year and moved to ESPN.

Which by the way gets started this weekend in Australia. F1 has added addition DRS zones to increase passing. Track now has three DRS zones in which if you are with in 1 second of car ahead of you. Then you can open flap in rear wing reducing drag and increasing your speed for that DRS zone.

ALSO heading into Martinsville:

Unfortunately that era will not end till Memorials Day. That is IF she makes the field. There are actually enough carts being built that we will see bumping.

RE: An era is over
With more details coming out it sound as if Indy Car hit a grand slam with this deal.

8 of the 17 races will be on NBC which is a 40% increase in races on over the air broadcast compared to this season. The other 9 on NBCSN. Then you have every practice session and every qualifying session on NBCSN.

Hinchcliffe and other ICS drivers have already been on several NBC family networks talking about the deal including CNBC show from Wall Street this past week.

Other news with the announcement of Jay Howard today the official list of drivers has reached 33 with several other announcements to come. WE WILL SEE A BUMP DAY THIS YEAR. The likes of J R Hilderbrand and Buddy Lazier still have not made official announcements.

Harding Racing which originally was going to field a second car for Danica before she got Carpenter ride, could still field second car.

And Juan Pablo Montoya is still trying to make his official plans for the 500. This years 500 could actually have more entrants than some Cup races this season.

With this change, will NASCAR be on Fox full time or be shared with ABC/ESPN?
Amazing how the fan base for NASCAR has gone down over the last 15 years or so.

The 1.9 million viewers at Martinsville down from 4.0 million last year can be overlooked due to race being delayed a day due to weather. But the other races this year shows major problems

That kind of decline is exactly in order with the rest of sports TV ratings.

What about going from over $75 million a year from Nextel to $20 million from Monster for series Title Sponsor.

Don't waste your time trying to use logic or facts. Some people just don't understand.

Yes and no. In most sports what we are seeing is a correction in TV numbers as TV sports rating grew between 15%-21% from 2006-2011. In that same time period all of non sports TV viewership rose only 6%. (ESPN Research study). While other sports were seeing a double digit INCREASE in TV viewership between 2005-2011. NASCAR had started it's decline in TV numbers to the tune of over 45%.

So a lot of the downfall is a correction from an overly inflated growth rate. Same way you see a market correction when the DJIA grows too quickly and does not represent the true market value.

However the NASCAR numbers have been falling for a longer period of time and have dropped to a range not seen in 20 plus years. Since it's high mark in 2005 NASCAR has seen a 45% drop in TV ratings.

Brian France took over in 2003 right before NASCAR peeked in 2005 and began making changes soon afterwards trying to regain the temporary fans. Series has been in a tailspin ever since.
