If you want to not buy tickets, OK, hope you feel better about yourself. This isn't professional athletics folks, this isn't some gigantic chain where you boycott to hurt their stock price. You can easily find where all the money goes for NIU athletics. The constant 'what's in it for me' or 'someone wouldn't talk to me' is annoying cry baby junk. Get over it. Perfectly fine/good to disagree with the strategies, suggest new ones, etc, but the 'what's in it for me?' is just awful.

I agree with others on here, I don't think that was any sort of strong vote of confidence on Monty, seemed to be more of "well...his players at least get good grades! can't do anything about it right now". Next year would seem to be 18 wins or gone, if I had to guess.

Couldn't have said it better.

Question: Except for the smaller donations, shouldn't the donor get a thank you letter/acknowledgement from Athletics (in addition to the receipt from the Foundation)? Shouldn't the letter be signed by the department head (AD), even if the body of the letter is a form letter? Or is it okay that the department does not acknowledge/thank its donors?

Question to HAF donors: Do you get a thank you letter/acknowledgement from Athletics or just a receipt from the NIU Foundation?

I am just curious as to what the HAF donors are getting.

Last two donations to the women's basketball program I received a receipt from the Foundation in an email.
I found it strange that I didn't receive a thank you letter in the mail outlining my donation like in the past.
My credit card was hit so I knew they received the money.
Is that a cutback?

You think maybe if we didn't have a president that stole money that people would be more willing to donate.

Donations are a two way street, what I ask for with a donation is a better football schedule (SATURDAY FOOTBALL). This year is better and I will be going to every Saturday game, but I am not getting season tickets to just get hosed in a season with 1 Saturday game against a D2 school in state "rival".

Thank you "its the sauce" for nailing it.

I do respect that everyone is entitled to their own financial decisions but I am stunned by some of the "long-time" supporters on this board who are talking about not renewing.

I don't like the scheduling lately either but I consider Season Tickets part of my donation and support of the Student/Athletes.

Some feel withdrawing financial support will get attention and that will change scheduling and whatever else they don't feel they are getting. Unfortunately, this is not some consumer product or restaurant that hasn't met your expectations. It doesn't work that way.

Our support of the Student Athletes is needed NOW more than ever.

Go Huskies! 04-cheers

So no matter the quality of the program, true fans should still throw money at it?

As I mentioned above in respecting others decisions.

I look at it as "support through thick and thin" rather than "throwing money at it".

As far as the "quality" you mention. We do have "Quality" when you remember to look at our Graduation and Grade Point stats. And look around at some of the scandals and investigations going on at other institutions.

I expect the student athletes to graduate and to have solid GPA's. I think that is a fundamental of college athletics. I don't believe STF and others deserve a great deal of praise for that. Nor, do I believe we should be happy with the overall because there are no scandals or "investigations" as at other schools. To celebrate that my school isn't being investigated like a Louisville is really a lowering of my (our) personal standards.

When one makes a donation to anything, on a basic level, they want to feel like their money is well given, appreciated, and then utilized in the most productive fashion. That goes for donating to your church, the Salvation Army, or HASF. If people here don't think leadership is doing their jobs well, no different than any other charity, they are going to lessen or quit their donations. The difference here is that people are donating to something and then expecting to consume the product. That isn't the same when I cut a check to the soup kitchen. If one isn't happy with the direction of the program, sending Monty an email isn't going to move the needle. The only thing that gets attention is a drop in donations, unfortunately.

Speaking of donations, does anybody know if there is data on the percentage of NIU athletes that donate back once they leave NIU. I’m not talking about the Ryan Diems and Justin McCareins of the world specifically.....I’m including the wrestler that never got into a match, the backup shortstop and/or the third string tight end....

I’m interesting in what percentage of those that have benefited from the opportunity of free or adjusted education (realize that most sports are not full rides) costs and also benefited from the generosity of people like those on this board—just what percentage become donors.

With over 400 athletes in programs at any given time—over the period of years there have to be thousands of former athletes out there—-what do they give to help those who have followed????

I would imagine that this number should be pretty simple to find——just pull out the football roster of say, 2000 or 2010 and match it up against a donor list. Any guesses at what the percentage would be?

I hope they give back. Would love to see our numbers compared to some P5 schools and FCS programs. At least pony up for the alumni association each year and throw a small donation now and then...

I’m just wondering—small would be good—-just $100 a year by 1,000 athletes is $1,000,000.....and there have to be more than 1,000 former athletes out there going back many years.

I would be interested in seeing the numbers.
Just in the MAC I would bet we would be near the bottom.
My guess would be Miami Ohio would be #1.
I wonder if Novak gives to NIU and Miami Ohio?

I totally agree and that is what begs this question. Just thinking that many of them were given thousands of dollars in educational and other benefits, and wondering the percentage that give back a fraction. I give piddly amounts and didn’t get any assistance while at NIU. Thousands of piddly amounts would add up.

You are correct. I wonder if Athletics does any targeted marketing to all of our former athletes? As you indicated all they need to do is ask for a minimal donation of $50 or $100. If they can do more, great.

They used to list all donors somewhere on website but I guess no more. Above is the outreach to former athelets.

The quality of all athletic programs ebbs and flows including NIU's. We had a hell of a run thanks to the foundation that Cary Groth and Joe Novak poured and Jerry Kill and Dave Doeren helped take to the next level. It is remarkable that this was sustained during a time of AD turnover.

I always understood that the good times could not go on forever and that one or two bad hires could set us back a bit.

We have been set back a bit and it is during these down times that the program needs our support (financial and otherwise) more than ever. This is not throwing good money after bad, it is supporting a program that we love, that we want to have long term success and that can and will rise again with proper support.
