Just as many abused that system....

so should your family went hungry because of those that sold their can meats and government cheese?

If you ever went with you parents to get these....wasn't a car full. You either did not pay attention or did not know what was going on....

Around the corner someone was buying that 5lb box of cheese for a couple bottles pf wine or $3 dollars. Same goes for the can chicken and can turkey.

People will always play by the rules IMO.

I sometimes wonder if the poor only ate the healthiest food for the human body if they would outlive the rich.

What ever the % of abuse is you can bet it's not as much as that goes on with the DOD and many other Gov. programs. There are many forms of welfare in this country and all of it doesn't go to the poor.

Hell you can bet the farm there are land (slum)lords abusing the section 8 program. They know when their renters are abusing the system....as long as they get that government check each month. They keep their mouth shut.

I asked this question before and no one took me up on the answer....a few, actually probably 30+ % on this form received some Pell grant help while in college.....WELFARE. But since it was one of you, its not really a government handout. Those of you that did get a pell grant....I would bet a 1000 to a $1 not all of it went towards your school needs.

Then we have those that wants to spend 100s of billions on going to Mars...what a joke. I would 10x rather my tax dollars go to help feed a family than to see it wasted like that. Yes even with the abuse.

Making America Great Again should be about having enough jobs...LABOR jobs, to get families off government help. Once we do that it will be a lot easier finding those that abuse the system. But till that happens.....

I would rather feed 1000 families for a year and have 70 abuse the system than pay a billion for 10 rockets and see 20% abuse rate. Or to pay farmers (corporations) 10s of billions to not grow or to grow and not sell a crop.

Abuse is in all parts of government....

You need to come ride a week with my old engine company. I promise it would only take you seeing the rampant abuses of the system for just that short of a period and you'd be changing your tune.

Which is the bigger sin.......

The person who sold the food card or the person who bought the food card?

Before you answer, I would suggest you watch an Andy episode regarding a "cannon".

The person who sold the food card because you KNOW they'll turn right around and b!tch about how they "need more" for food.

Sorry, nothing like going hungry to change one's ways.

Neither. Both are equally as bad.

I know and understand there is abuse in the system. There's laws and rules in place to take care of this abuse just as there are in all government run programs. I also know the abuse rate is no higher than with most things ran by the government.

You can find a 8 to 10% abuse rate in almost everything....You find and address the abuse. You are only seeing a very small % of those getting SNAP.

So do you make our soldiers dig a hole and **** in it just because someone abused the system with $200 toilet seat? Or make them use rocks to hammer a nail just because someone charged $100 for a $5 hammer?

No you find the abuse and when someone abuses SNAP they should go to jail and be off the system.

We tried to report the abuse for it to be fixed. We were finally told to stop reporting it because they knew it was there and couldn't do anything about it out of fear of being called racist.

We had what we called the station fund. Everybody chipped in $50 a pay period (every two weeks) that went towards buying the kitchen staples for the FD. Coffee, creamer, teabags, sugar, spice, condiments, etc. and would buy the propane for our grill, fish cooker, etc. Most months we had two pay periods so that would be $1200 a month for 12 people, some months we had three so that would be $1800. This didn't buy the meats, vegetables that made up the meals themselves, just the staples. Each shift was responsible for their own meals beyond what we as a group had agreed would be shared costs.

We had a set day each week that we would go to the grocery store to replenish. You tell me how someone on government assistance, usually living in one of the Section 8 apartments in the area, can afford to spend more per week in groceries than a 12 man fire station where everybody is fully employed and is only buying the staples.

Or tell me why we are paying for the complete medical care of someone, including the ambulance transport at a greatly reduced rate, when they are living in a house full of the latest TVs, sound systems, video games, etc, and have vehicles sporting a couple thousand dollars worth of accessories.

You can ***** about the $200 hammer in the military all you want but we both know that is because the hammer is only $20 and the rest of the $180 is going towards a top secret project that we don't want on the books for national security reasons. If you really want to cut waste in government start with eliminating every position that has a title like Deputy Assistant Undersecretary and go from there. Then you determine why agencies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Institutes of Health, US Merchant Marine Academy, Bureau of Engraving and Printing and Dept of Veterans Affairs have stand-alone police departments.

"Healthy food" leads to a healthy body which reduces medical cost. While I understand people don't want other people all up in their face and space.......

You think their were a lot of drug dealers with a use for more beans and rice than he could eat himself do you. That changed when they started the food stamp program. Much easier to sell those for 50 cent or whatever on the dollar. They spent like cash. Yeah, he'd take that.

If many people were able to move their beans and rice to anything approaching the easy of the programs since, I congratulate them.

OK 7 kids maybe a car full...

beans and rice? surely that car wasn't just loaded down with those two. I'm fairly sure your car had a few gallon size cans of ...

peanut butter
Turkey
Chicken

and the most valuable thing those 5lb blocks of cheese. Lets not forget, cheese was pretty expensive back in the late 60s early 70s.

If you don't think those gallon size can and that 5lb block of cheese were being traded for wine or money....you were too young to know any difference.

As a 8 year old I asked my mother what is that line for...the line was with in a block of where you picked up your commodities. The answer was, "where the wino's sell their government cheese" and it wasn't just limited to wino's.

BTW the cans of Chicken, Turkey and Cheese were really good. The peanut butter had to be stirred a lot before using.

Those selling their stamps for cash is probably about as low as those trading government cheese for wine or cash. People abuse EVERYTHING. Even Government cheese, Turkey, Chicken, Peanut Butter.

There's laws in place to deal with the abuse.

RE: 198 arrested for food stamp fraud in Jacksonville
I remember packing the cars with 7 kids and two adults. Kids sat on older kids and on mother's lap. With todays government meddling I wonder how that family of 9 would travel with the govmint telling us that young children need to be on baby carriers or whatever they're called. I know when my two kids were young we didn't have those rules and sometimes the youngest would sleep on that space next to the rear window or on the bench seat in the back where many were conceived in the first place. LOL

And don't say that is too dangerous. It's more dangerous today with today's parents texting while driving. At least we paid attention to the road then.

If we had private charity handling this instead of bureaucrats that depend upon expanding the system in order to keep their jobs?...We would see far less fraud. Private charity would be incentivized to see that the donations they received were not wasted and defrauded. Without the government being involved there would be a "market" for charity and competition between charities would keep the system clean.

As it stands now? There is no incentive by bureaucrats to reduce this part of the Welfare State. To do so would mean "cutting your own throat".
