Strongly disagree. I grew up as an Ohio State fan during the Keith Byers and Chris Carter years. Saw them play in many bowls, but nothing comes near the fun of UC in the Sugar/Orange/Belk/Liberty and others. UC is my alma mater. Coincidently, none of you would be able to make it as a Browns fan. I remember back in middle school the kids that would adopt the current hot Nfl superbowl team as their favorite. Not me, I wore my Greg Pruitt jersey. As a fan this is my way of showing commitment and loyalty. Would it be fun to go back to OSU and support a perennial winner, no.

I’ll tell you as a both a UC fan and even Xavier fan growing up but an OSU alum who was still in school for their most recent national title it’s not. Maybe it’s just because I’ve always hated the idiotic fans the big schools OSU Bama Tenn have but winning the national title at OSU was no where near UC’s Sugar Bowl season.

The only thing that is nice is Cincy sports have had a curse since I’ve been alive. Ohio State is one school I know can win the big game when they play in it. Bengals Reds Cincy Xavier...well not so much.

Sports is supposed to be fun. I grew up an osu fan and stopped when I attended UC. Yes, the Sugar/Orange/Belk1/Liberty were fun. However, being a fan of a perennial winner is fun. I would love to watch UC make deep runs and win every year.

Hopefully my kids are smart and pick teams different than mine. I don’t want them to go through what I have had to endure.

Funny story. At the local watering hole on a Sunday afternoon. The Browns are 0-15 and the 20 year old bartender was a Browns fan. I asked Why???????????? Are you unaware of the history? He said it was a generational thing, he followed the same team as his dad. Just like me and probably your kids.

That was my mistake. My step father talked me into being a Browns fan at anearly age. Worst decision ever. It’s funny b/c in 1st grade I was a Steelers fan. Whoops

RE: Fellas it’s been fun
I'll say this: there's no way I actually give this up, and I'm sure many here feel the same, no matter what you say now.

To those that are leaving, I'm gonna miss you all and the insight you provide on this board. I came here a few years ago because my obsession with UC athletics was unparalleled by the rest of my friends. It's been nice finding that conversation on Banter.

At age 21, and probably one of the youngest posters on here, I simply haven't reached that breaking point yet. I sat through the dark years in the mid-2000's and as much as this sucks, I'd rather be in this position than losing to Bradley in the first-round of the CBI.

It's a terrible feeling, and in 10 short years I feel I've experienced a lifetime of heartbreak, so if you truly are heading out the door I totally get it. Hopefully the younger generation on this board can fill the void left by your departure. And maybe one day we'll all return with something worth celebrating.

I'm 22 and feel the same way. I think it's because we literally haven't experienced any kind of meaningful post season success for UC or any Cincinnati sports team. While this is very disappointing, it's just more of the same. It feels about the same as the Jeremy Hill fumble or the 2012 Reds collapse.

Do you go to UC? Maybe we've seen each other before.

Recent graduate (last winter), but long-time poster, fwiw. I pity those in Clifton who had to see me after the Jeremy Hill fumble. I'm still trying to decide if this feels worse.

Ah, I graduate this spring. I'm glad this game was on a Sunday evening, otherwise I would have been with my friends drinking my blues away, lol. The collapses all feel the same to me because I thought each team had a very good chance to make it to their respective championship games. Reds and Bearcats losses were historic, but the Bengals loss was just really stupid.

Being a fan of a historically bad team is easy. You're the lovable loser with no expectations. The last decade of Cincinnati sports has been way worse imo. You are set up to think you have a chance to do something special and then are left speechless. Just think of the ways we've lost recently.
Reds go 2-0 in SF and then lose 3 straight at home.
Reds get no hit by Holladay in the playoffs.
Kenyon Martin breaks his leg.
Carson Palmer ACL tears after going 1/1 for 70 yards to the late Chris Henry.
Bengals lose to the Steelers after having the game won, then a fumble and two personal fouls.
Texas makes the field goal to send us to the sugar bowl and send our coach out of town.
Bearcats blow a 22 point lead with 10 minutes left (2nd biggest choke all time) with the easiest path to an elite 8 in history.
Being a browns fan is so much easier when you know you suck.

So after months of ripping on people for not being enthusiastic enough, he bolts? Bipolar, maybe?

I was sick yesterday. By chance, after sleeping all day, I was awakened at 6. So I pulled my fat ass out io bed and watched. Despite my better judgment, I let the likes of rath let a little excitement creep in. With over 4 minutes left and UC up by six, I saw the writing on the wall. I went back to bed. I knew what was coming, and I felt crappy enough.

It’s a stupid basketball game. This too shall pass.

This loss stings, but pales in comparison to me the destruction of the old Big East and UC's demotion into the AAC. In addition to an AQ BCS bid, we lost coaches and an AD because of it, not to mention one of our oldest rivals and several new ones (Pitt, WVU etc.). The loss tonight, while it sucks, is something that the team can recover from easier than the aforementioned.

Last night it was tough watching my wife, daughter and son in law melt down at the end of the game. For some odd reason I handled the disappointment very well. Must be my age approaching 60. I do think some of the posters here who have over 30,000 posts are overdue for a sabbatical.

Yep. Perspective and context are important at this point. I respect what other fans choose to do. Our household is still all in with the 'Cats because it's our University. I love the Reds and tolerate the Bengals but I'll never feel that same sense of connection with the pro teams.

Regarding last night's debacle: was it, historically speaking, the worst UC tournament performance since the blown lead to lose the '63 national championship? Perhaps. This team seemed to be Cronin's best with a disintegrating bracket awaiting them that gave us visions of a Final Four.

In retrospect, most disturbing to me was the emotional rollercoaster: newfound euphoria with UC's start followed by the agony of total collapse. I thought, "This team has finally arrived...Nevada is fatigued...this could be a blowout coronation...prepare a new banner for the opening of 5th/3rd." This, followed shortly by, it's all over; new year, old result.

Some here have taken exception to my comments when they were perceived as critical of this coaching staff. That's fine; we're all just sharing opinion. But I go back to my belief that past performance is the best predictor of future success. The reality is, under Mick's watch his teams, save one, have all found new and different ways to lose during the first weekend of March Madness.

Much of Mick's work has been good which makes this even a more vexing problem for UC to remedy. UC doesn't dump a coach that made the tournament after a successful season, although some elites have if they perceive that their program isn't achieving at the expected level. If I were Mick's boss I'd be more concerned about his dismissive attitude toward those who suggest he could be an even better coach by learning and growing in the job.

In the near term, more worrisome to me is the prospect of opening 5th/3rd without proven frontcourt veterans or blue chip replacements. And then again, if that all works out as he's planned and another NCAA bid happens, what hope is there beyond the first weekend of March 2019 for a different result given past performance?

After living in Boston and Chicago before they had winners in baseball... I like your post quite a bit. There is something good about being a loyal long suffering fan. When you win you aren't just jumping on the bandwagon and that's why the Red Sox 2004 and Cubs 2016 world series wins were so sweet to see. We just need our Theo Epstein.

RE: Fellas it’s been fun
Rath and to those leaving, I wish you well. I had thought, especially through your vitamin posts, your perspective would carry the day regardless of the NCAA outcome. Something changed for you, it happens, but I hope we meet again here or at a UC function.

The ironic part is I totally get it, I used to be "that guy". It ruined my whole weekend when UC football lost, lived through the Minter years, saw the Orange bowl and Sugar Bowl live, was in the stands when Bob beat UMass with Wingfield and the Shoe was deafening. My first year of season tickets after service was Cronin's first year, it was a brutal time to be a season ticket holder, but I fondly remember players like Williamson going toe to toe with Big East heavyweights and giving so much effort in spite of losing you just knew that kid would be a success in life.

Now that I look back over 23 years of fandom, my perspective has changed as well. I've lost half my friends in the military to combat or related incidents. The other half for the most part are so chewed up mentally or physically they're on surgery 4-5 in their early forties, medicated, and will never be the same. My good friend's wife has stage 4 metastatic cancer and is dying with 3 young kids. My best buddy in college is already dead from cancer. I've seen first hand folks I respect and look up to succumb to mental illness, problems I used to say suck it up to and now realize it's every bit the challenge cancer or other disease is. I moved to Cincinnati years ago and find myself with no family left in Ohio, life certainly turned out different than when I started this road at UC in the early 90s than I expected.

These details aren't important in the sense of one person's journey, mine is relatively mild compared to many I know. Heck, if you want to read an inspirational story google Keanu Reeves early life and see what a person can do in spite of immense odds while staying true to themselves while also being wildly successful. Or read thank you for your service and see how folks coming back from overseas will never integrate back into civilian life, it will certainly update perspective. But what these tidbits do, and what i hoped Rath and others would see today, is that perspective. No one is shooting at us, I've not lost 20 pounds starving in a survival camp, the sun came up today, UC had a great season that I enjoyed and will really treasure the memories of games and such with friends and fellow fans. It was fun.

Mind you I'm not critical at all of those who want more. There are valid concerns to whether our team can address their shortcomings in March going forward or if this is a pattern to be repeated over and over. Honestly, I have no idea. I guess what I'm saying is that perspective, that Vitamin deficiency talked about before, can be honed through adversity to help you enjoy the journey, appreciate that nothing is perfect, and while losing sucks you can spend 5 minutes on it then prepare for more pressing matters while realizing next year will probably be fun again if you keep that same lens that it's a game to be enjoyed regardless. Thanks Clark, thanks Washington, I enjoyed your career. Better days are coming. People who make more than I do are paid to worry about the outcome yesterday, if you don't think any coach after that loss won't sleep for a week, well.... But I had fun. And I will again next year. I just learned to take the atic out of fan and this is a way better ride. Enjoy the day.

Go cats!

Wow Fubar your post almost made me cry. You've been through a lot.

Yes sports is entertainment and yesterday was like a Shakespearean tragedy.. at the end of the day it's only entertainment. I keep going back to what my 5 year old daughter said "I'd rather play basketball than watch it". While I'm not playing this year in the work league, next year if my schedule is lighter on Saturdays I just might. Its a fun sport to play, its a fun sport to watch.

Agree with the age, 67, my only thought was "that's who Cronin is" and my tee time for today is 11:30. Life goes on.
