Big Ten Hockey is finally doing what it was meant to do--dominate the sport.

RE: 2018 Hockey NCAA Tournament Field
Last year the B1G was down majorly because schools like Wisconsin and Michigan St were atrociously bad. That brought down the rest of their RPIs and only Penn St made the NCAAs. Some hockey fans celebrated, but with the money that that the B1G has, it was just a matter of time.

But Michigan got a new coach, replacing a dinosaur, and Minnesota will get one too. The coaches have almost all turned over.

But the B1G will weaken again if they bring in new teams like Iowa, Illinois etc. Hockey East has its ups and downs, with state schools like UMass, UNH, Maine, and Vermont being mostly down. But BU and BC rarely have down years because they are stacked with NHL picks. Same thing with many NCHC teams. Some teams are liked by the NHL because they train their draft picks properly. When North Dakota can’t pick off some of Minnesota’s prime recruits, maybe things will change.

Were you born an a$$hole or did you have to work at it?

From 1981 until recently, did Clemson "matter" at all?

When Clemson football played ND in 2015 at home, Clemson won by...two points. It had to hang on for dear life, too.

The talent disparity didn't look so much different in that game. Not so much to brag about, in my opinion.

P.S. "A sport they matter in" as in any sport, right?

ND basketball has two recent Elite 8 appearances and won an ACC title in the last few years.

Clemson hasn't been in the Elite 8 since 1980. It has never won the ACC, to my knowledge.

ND football won 10 games two of the last three years. It beat LSU in a New Years Day bowl this past season.

ND women's basketball is in the Elite 8 for something like 5 of the last six years.

ND lacrosse was in the Final Four in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

ND men's soccer won a national championship in 2015.

ND fencing just won the 2018 national championship, giving them back to back national titles.

Try again with your snark. You fail.

That is some next-level defensiveness. Well done.

They’ve come a long way since then. Didn’t their last coach get fired for feuding with the AD over facilities? I heard it was over the practice rink.

Ohio State draws well enough - they're in the Top 10 for attendance. That just happen to play in that mausoleum-like arena, and even 5,300 a game looks like nothing.

Yep this year Ohio State averaged 5337 while Michigan averaged 5399...difference is that Michigan is in a arena with 6637 capacity vs. 17,500 for Ohio State.

You could be Sacred Heart who averaged 363 per game in 8525 arena.

I think that the addition of ND helped Big Ten hockey out a bit.

Wisconsin in good times is normally the leader. Sacred Heart just moved up from a tiny rink and is now looking to build an on campus rink. SHU seems to have Quinnipiac as its model. Atlantic Hockey conference teams have really upgraded.

Here’s attendance leaders which only have “western” schools:

The flagship Hockey East schools seem to have fallen off the map.

Maine, UVM, UNH, and UMass haven’t done anything for years. But UMass-Lowell has done well except this year. Don’t emulate your fellow state schools.

I wasn't trying to do that, we just had a pretty good year, and I am just being positive. And hoping we improve and get better lol

Eh, the past 2 seasons have pitted an NCHC final both years.

Hardly can call the Big 10 dominating the sport after this outlier year.

But makes sense: the budget of each of Big 10 Hockey member is probably 20 times that of all the schools combined of any other conference.

Is it an outlier or a harbinger of things to come? With the BTN and big budgets the Big Ten has a huge advantage over most other hockey programs and sooner or later those advantages were going to manifest themselves.

Thing is, the Big 10 teams already had a competitive advantage back when they were in the CCHA and WCHA. Speaking from the CCHA, Michigan and Michigan St consistently dominated the conference, and Minnesota and Wisconsin were always at the top. Not saying we should go back to those days, just saying Michigan / Minnesota / Wisconsin / Michigan St have been powerhouses in college hockey for decades now.

But I can see where you're coming from. Personally, if I were UND, I'd jump over to the Big 10 while the Big 10 is still exploring options and considering their possible addition.

The Minnesota source that said UND would go to the B1G may be have confused by UND and NDU’s similar acronyms. It’s happened before with hockey.

ND beat Michigan 4-3 on a last second goal.

Actually...with 5.2 seconds left..."Arike'd" the Wolverines.

ND is going for its third national title within 13 days.

I think it all started with Miles Boykin's one handed circus catch late in the Citrus Bowl against LSU.

It seems to have carried over to women's basketball and hockey from there.
