Engineer Left Voicemail About Cracking on Florida Bridge Days Before It Collapsed
Quote:An engineer at Figg Bridge Group left a voicemail about cracks in a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University two days before it collapsed.
On Thursday, the Miami bridge collapsed on multiple cars, killed six people and injured at least 10 others. According to the New York Daily News, lead engineer W. Denney Pate left a voicemail for a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) employee named Tom about cracking in the bridge.
“Hey Tom, this is Denney Pate with FIGG bridge engineers. Calling to, uh, share with you some information about the FIU pedestrian bridge and some cracking that’s been observed on the north end of the span, the pylon end of that span we moved this weekend,” the voicemail said.
It added that “obviously” repairs will have to be done but clarified that “from a safety perspective” no issues were discovered.
The information wasn't received until Friday — a day after the collapse — because the FDOT employee was out of the office.

Hairline/Temperature cracks in concrete are common and pose no serious threat. Structural cracks are another thing entirely. I feel it's safe to say they would not errected it if that was the case.
