Met Dave Odom once way back in the 90's. My HS assistant coach played college ball with him at Guilford College and was good friends with him..

Interestingly enough, our go to play for a three-pointer was named Odom after the elder Odom and modeled after a play that Wake ran at the time.

I got to watch Ryan Odom play Guard for Hampden-Sydney many times vs Bridgewater in the 1990's.

Hopefully he's on the short list Bourne says he keeps just in case he needs it.

Well Ron Sanchez is expected to be named as the next coach at Charlotte. We'll see if he can go better than 18-45 over his first two seasons.

Hiring an assistant coach of a successful team doesn't always mean you're getting something special.
I recall a certain assistant coach for a team that made the final four that we hired by the name of Dean Keener. That hire put us back almost a decade.

Sanchez is not Keener, thankfully for Charlotte. Doesn't mean he'll be a slam dunk, either.
Doesn't need to do much to surpass 18 wins in two years, though.

The issue hiring Keener was that Paul Hewitt was a terrible coach. I don't think we can make the same parallel to Sanchez & Tony Bennett...

I was at this game, best seat I have ever had, the row behind the press. I could hear the players talking to each other.

It was an awesome experience and my first march madness game.

Mark Price made $500K per year as coach of Charlotte.

Yes, it will be interesting to see the details of Sanchez’s contract. It should give some insight into how much JMU lowballed their offers when Bourne’s lip service indicated it would be a national search for a coach to elevate the program from where it was.

JMU gets out negotiated by a Charlotte program that has had 4 straight losing seasons including 6-23 this year. They also have a brand new AD who just started this month.

From the reporting that I have seen and reading the tea leaves Sanchez was going to be the hire. JMU used a third party to help identify and interview interested candidates. I don't think a candidate shows interest in the job and it gets that far without the subject of the compensation for the position/staff coming up. I believe the compensation package/range was something that was discussed between Fogler and the candidates early on.

I don't buy that JMU low balled Sanchez at the last moment. It's fair to criticize that JMU should be spending more on a head basketball coach but something else must have happened to kill the deal in the late stages. Sanchez got cold feet, his family didn't like the area, he didn't think he could win at JMU, he saw another job on the horizon, he made some demands that hadn't been communicated previously, who knows.

Memphis has been shady since, well, forever. Dana Kirk jailed. I never felt that Larry Finch ran a clean program. Murder capital of the world. Pennys antics dont seem off.

UMBC assistant Griff Aldrich has been hired at Longwood as their head basketball coach. Saw that on the Richmond Channel 8 site this morning. I guess success has its rewards, never mind that Longwood is, well, kinda out there in the sticks....
