Wes Miller - UNCG
yes, the guard we had at JMU who everyone thought sucked, (except me) until he transfered to UNC and played significant minutes in their championship year.
UNCG - head coach
2018 - 25-10,(15-3) No. 1 seed, win soco, NCAA - takes Gonzaga to the wire
2017 - 25-10 (14-4)No. 1 seed, lost in champ of Soco, NIT 1st round loss
2016 - 15-19 (10-8)CBI, 8 seed, soco 1st round loss
2015 11-22, (6-12) 8 seed, soco 2nd round loss
2014 14-18, (7-9)play in game,soco 1st round loss
2013 9-22, (6-12) 6th
2012 11-11 (10-5) 1st - interim coach
First 5 years
- it took Wes Miller 5 years to get to the 1 seed and the NIT
- 4 losing seasons before the breakthrough in 2016-17
- didnt get out of second round of soco for 5 years
last 2 years
- 25-10 both years
- 1 seed both years
- NCAA and NIT
probably a hot coaching name and will probably be moving on from UNCG if not this year, very soon.
Can we really judge Lou on his record his first two years?
if lou were to go, 9-22, 14-18, 11-22, & 15-19 - how many on here would be calling for him to be fired? If LR goes 11-22 next year, DM2, Hart & team will be calling for LR's dismissal. How many would be calling for patience? How about very few.

RE: Wes Miller - UNCG
If I'm not mistaken, and someone can check this, Wes Miller won right away his first year with a long winning streak. Second, Miller is from Greensboro so maybe he doesn't leave right away. And oh, one more thing, UNCG signed a 4-star 6-8 player this past fall, beating out a lot of other schools. Perhaps he wants to stay another season or two (he's still young).

I had a similar thought. Wes Miller showing it pays to be patient with a coach.

yes, he started as interim and went 11-11 and made an impressive run. He is from NC, it might be Winston Salem. His dad was a WF alum and big donor, i believe. we screwed it up with Wes big time. another failure of the keener years

yep, you beat me to it. didnt see your post.
i would think Wes is bound for a step up from us. also, he is probably gone in the next 2 years and LR is going to get 2 more years at a minimum.

RE: Wes Miller - UNCG
PG you might want to note that UNCG had single digit wins in the 3 years prior to the coaching change.
I hope we aren’t aspiring for JMU to become a UNCG who has a winning percentage of 45% in their 30 years of D-1 basketball including zero tournament wins. Al of that coming in the Sothern and Big South conferences.
Bourne has publicly set the bar much higher for JMU.
Rowe or any other JMU coach with 4 straight losing seasons will certainly be fired.

huh? yes I am aspiring to be UNCG of the CAA. who would aspire to be the team in the years prior to Wes? Look what he has done over the last 6 years.
-turned around a moribund program
- two 25-10 seasons
- finishing the last two years as the 1 seed
- an NIT berth and NCAA berth
- taking the zags to the wire.
if we did that in the context of the CAA, what would there be to complain about? yes, it might take 4-5 years. everyone hopes they can catch a keats, a shaka, or a lefty and get a quick turnaround. sometimes it might be a longer road. as long as we are progressing, I am behind LR.

Ok. I disagree. We shouldn’t be waiting 6 or 7 years to get to the NCAA while committing to an $88 million arena.
Bourne has stated once every 4 years is the minimum expectation.

so you would have been for firing Wes Miller after going 15-19 in his 4th year regardless of circumstances?

How did that patience you called for for Dillard work out?
Dean Keener lost his first four seasons too. Did we cut him lose too early?
For the record I liked Wes too and wished he had stayed, but the reason he transferred is because he was upset Dillard was returning.
You liked Dillard, and you liked Wes, but Wes thought Dillard should have been released earlier - as did I.
I'd argue the patience we had with Dillard is what killed interest & momentum in JMU men's basketball.

If only we could go back in time and kept Lefty indefinitely...letting him retire or help us find another coach. We drove the JMU car over the cliff.
There has to be several outstanding coaches out there who would love to come to JMU and recruit and play in a fabulous new arena. Heck, I bet I could even find a good coach.

Regardless of circumstances, No. but barring the loss of his best players due to season ending injuries then ,yes, 4 straight years of losing justifies termination.

You have to wonder if certain people who have a lot of opinions on basketball coaching have EVER successfully coached ANYTHING themselves before.

Absolutely agree with all of this, the Keener years were the worst I've ever personally witnessed but it was Dillard that walked us to the edge of the cliff and jumped.

RE: Wes Miller - UNCG
Elephant in the room here- Miller's appearance and the type of player he was in college makes people perceive him a certain way vs. a front court player who may look different. Your size and the position you played impacts how people perceive you as an Xs and Os coach. It was a contributing factor on why Patrick Ewing was never a hot head coaching candidate.
It's a little like in Baseball how the former Catcher is thought to be smarter and a better Managerial candidate. Same is at play in basketball coaching with Point Guards.

In this case, I would say perception can be reality. The mind of a PG should think more like the HC than that of the C, should it not?

RE: Wes Miller - UNCG
Wes Miller didn't have a winning season at UNCG until....he implemented the full court press last season. He had gone 11-11, 9-22, 14-18, 11-22. After implementing the press, he went 25-19 and 27-8. I'm sure he watched Keatts and UNCW and realized he had to do something. As a result, Miller has turned around UNCG. That is the reason he is being talked about today. Props to him for completely changing his strategy in order to win. He now presses more than UNCW did with Keatts.

I guess so- coach on the floor sees the game differently etc. just saying sometimes it's a little overplayed IMO.
