OT: FIU pedestrian bridge collapse - Deaths reported.
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/co...16174.html

The bridge, scheduled to be completed in 2019, collapsed atop an unknown number of people and cars underneath.
South Florida’s WSVN reported that several people had been killed. Television news helicopters were ordered to back off so rescuers could listen for sounds from survivors.

Not knowing anything of what exactly happened, my first thought is that a contractor may have changed out a type of connector or changed the way a joint is supposed to fasten. Too many people check the math on the drawings for things like this. IIRC that is what caused the Hyatt bridge to collapse.

Things like this are tragic. It's my biggest fear as I am about to graduate with an engineering degree. I know it wont bring any of the people back nor will it heal wounds, but hopefully they figure out what the cause was so this doesn't happen again.

The thing is they shouldn't have had people anywhere near it when they were testing it. That would be common sense.

It's very unfortunate to report but common sense died many years ago.
