Gary Parrish
@GaryParrishCBS
I’m told agents making calls to Memphis today to see about getting a client involved are being told there is essentially no coaching search. It’s all Penny Hardaway and only Penny Hardaway.

In reality, I believe that posters here are flipping burgers at Mickey D’s (or working for a salary) in most cases. I own a (small) business, but I would not presume to tell the University how to negotiate a deal of the magnitude with Penny.

Just my thoughts!
I don't think anyone is emailing the University with their ideas, but the board exists to discuss this sort of stuff...

You pay based on his experience...

No high school coach deserves $1 MILLION but he will likely get that.

One thing that is exiting me about Penny is if he does succeed it will be with a lot of local talent...

Nothing felt as good as beating the big boys with a team full of Local kids.

Memphis fans pride themselves in having local talent winning for the city. It’s a tradition like no other....

It is not up to Penny to accept less in order to help pay for Tubby. Would look hinky to fire Tubby and hire Penny for less than even a competitive salary for an assistant. You want to be at the top you invest what it takes to get there. It is a business, plain and simple. Pay Penny well.

Penny is not going to take less money. That was always foolish thinking.

It will be closer to Smith $$ than most people here think.

If they pay a guy who has never coached on the D-1 level close to 3 million per year, they all deserve to be fired

The insanity started with the Opie raise to 2.65 million after Dellavodova gifted him a tournament win....then it continued with Tub's contract. The madness has to end at some point.

I'm thinking we pay Penny about a million per year and your post is just stupidity on your part.

I'm sure the Memphis administration will F it up and overpay him, just like they did with Tubby. No program with the expectations Memphis has would have even considered paying Tubby $3 million.

Let me be clear: I support the Penny hire (with some skepticism). I want it to work. I'm not the one paying him, so I guess it doesn't matter to me other than how it affects the program overall. Don't overpay for him. Work out a fair offer and leggggoooo.

Penny's agent has Memphis in a corner.

You might be ok with missing out on Penny for being cheap.

No one else here is.

2M+. EASY

I said they shouldn't pay him more than $3 million. I really don't think they should pay him more than $2 million as a starting point, but we will see.

We are a top 25 job? But we won't pay our coach top 25 money?

:/

Y'all are a interesting bunch of people.

So stupid

You don't have to be a business owner or corporate executive to speak sensibly on this topic. Conversely, being a business owner, corporate executive or even an AD or University President doesn't mean you won't completely screw up a multi-million dollar deal. Case in point: the Tubby Smith contract. Can anyone make a case for that being a good contract? Other than Tubby Smith.

The contract is fine. It has an extended period for the buyout, which is a nice feature. The salary? Well that was between Tubby, Admin, and boosters. Their money really didn't cost you anything. Nonetheless, you can disagree with the salary - but the contract is fine.

Agreed...

Penny has no history...No experience...

He is being given this job without being qualified...He shouldn't expect to be one of the top 75 paid coaches in the country. If Penny has any sense he will accept a low payday and have the boosters open the checkbook for assistants.

Get good enough assistants and the money will come.

and that's why he's hired some agents.

Just stop, there's no place for common sense here.

Parrish said that Cal & Kentucky wanted Tubby to continue to be the Memphis head coach because the greatest threat to them not getting Wiseman and DJ Jeffries is Penny Hardaway as the Memphis head coach. That they made a play on getting Jeffries to commit ‘this early’ which is highly unusual to cause the University of Memphis administration to pause and cast doubts on the supposedly potential recruiting chops of Penny in perhaps a monkey wrench attempt in them not hiring Penny. Anfernee Hardaway is a serious threat to Calipari in getting players according to people in the business have told him

Sure, he wants those two, but if you haven't noticed, Kentucky gets players from all over the country.

Sure they can....however wiseman is projected already to be the #1 draft pick when he comes out of college, He’s supposedly that good. That would be a huge grab for anybody including mighty Kentucky. Plus, Cal or any top program don’t just give up just because they can get other players. Memphis is a pipeline of player getters for many schools and giving up so easily isn’t any coaches plan

And the University of Memphis will be able to recruit across the country with Penny at the helm, because he is recognizable everywhere. His name alone stands out to kids, and now with Memphis East reputation across the country, the college basketball world is watching Memphis daily wondering. They are wondering what is going to happen here, and all fan bases know that some of the best recruits could come here, stealing them away from the likes of Kentucky’s, the Dukes, and North Carolina’s. 02-13-banana
