Ian Rapoport

The #Browns are expected to sign OT Chris Hubbard to a 5-year deal worth $37.5M with nearly $18M guaranteed, source said. More help up front for Cleveland.

Good for him. Sadly, Cleveland is the last place I want any Blazer to be, but that’s a huge contract.

Staff seems active in FA signings so may not be as bad as you think it will be. I assume a sign of getting veterans while getting drafts for the future or that 1 impact player.

Holy crap. How did he become that valuable in the last few years? Did he end up getting a lot of playing time for the Steelers?

I haven't watched the NFL in over 2 years so I wouldn't know.

All players want to go to a winning team, but the NFL money is good all over the league because the NFL does not favor "big market teams" over "small market teams" in distributing league income. It is too bad college football in the NCAA doesn't learn that lesson.

He played a little over 70% of the Steelers offensive snaps and played all 5 positions. I was hoping we’d get him in DC. Versatility is a valuable commodity

Cleveland is one of the worst organizations in professional sports. They have a long way to go to become decent, let alone a contender.

Exactly. The Steelers have even said they'd love to keep him, but they have 5 starters under contract plus another supersub . Hubbard's 3 year deal is up and he is due to get paid. He will be missed in Pittsburgh.

Cleveland has a new GM who may have a clue. They also have $100 million in cap space and the 1st and 4th picks in the draft. I can see them going from 0 to decent this year. If they draft the right QB they could be on the way to respectability

For salary cap and active roster reasons, the four most valuable OL positions to have on your roster are
LT, RT, Center, and your 6th offensive lineman, who is expected to be able to play either every position except center, or in rare cases, all 5 positions on the line. Having one backup that can provide cover for five other positions is extremely valuable, both for cap reasons and also for roster reasons.
It saves money on the cap, because the other offensive linemen you carry can be minimum contract guys.

The big reason guys like Chris are so valuable to NFL teams though is roster size. NFL teams have 53 man rosters, but they can only dress 46 on gameday. It used to be that NFL teams would dress 9 offensive linemen. With the advent of the spread, you need to carry extra safeties and CBs though. Most nfl teams have gone to dressing 8 linemen, but a few teams, including the Steelers when they had Chris, could get away with dressing only 7. Freeing up that extra roster spot for an additional corner or safety is huge, and it's what just made Chris a lot of money.

Noooooo! 03-puke
He played most of the offensive snaps last season at right guard for Ramon Foster, who was injured for most of the season. Also played a game at center to replace Maurkice Pouncey who was sick. Had a few missed snaps to Ben, but decent considering he didn't practice at that position.
He was very effective in the run, opening up holes and performing downfield blocking for both Le'Veon Bell and James Conner. He will be missed. Hate that he ended up at Cleveland, but guess it's better than Baltimore or Cincinnati.

I believe he was in at RT for Gilbert most of the time.

I'll believe it when I see it with Cleveland. Until something different happens they are always on my short list for worst run franchises in professional sports.
