RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
It's kind of hard to say we're lined up to be better next year - except for Zabo probably being replaced by Harris, and maybe Gholston coming in and earning time, and except for any unexpected transfers, it looks like the same crew next year. Maybe Pippen develops, maybe Peterson improves his offense. If would be good if one of the Frederick/Nwankwo/Whittington set could earn time on the floor with Pippen and De La Rosa, and we could play more with 3 bigs.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
In my opinion the grad transfer rule has really hurt Kent. While we've only lost one player (Thomas) to it, I think it's cost us the ability to consider redshirting players. Why redshirt a freshman and if that gives him the ability to leave as a senior? Both Pippen and Avery were probably not ready for D1 as freshman and really didn't contribute much. Imagine how good we'd feel if we had 3 and 2 years remaining from them respectively?

Also, it brings up concerns about taking transfers. Heck we could be holding our breath with Harris and Whittington this time next year. Supposedly coaches were recruiting Hall going into last year. The one thing we have going for us right now is coaches will probably be on their best behavior this off season with the cloud of the FBI probe out there. So I would think they're less likely to illegally contact players that haven't announced they're transferring.

I agree the big schools always win these battles and it’s not just basketball. A very good CMU wrestler ended up at Penn St. because they had a hole in their line-up at 133. A very good EMU gymnast ended up at Florida because they were a bit weak at one event. Etc. etc. What Kent has to do is aggressively go after athletes from the lesser conferences that have proven themselves to be better than they were thought to be coming out of high school (I don’t mean illegally) If they don’t do that they will lose big time. The schools that adapt the best will come out better than their rivals. We can’t worry about losing ground to the Penn Sts and the Floridas but we better make sure the Toledo’s, Ohio’s, Akron’s etc don’t gain on us.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
The bottom line is that if you back to Gary Waters' first recruiting class right up to the present, you would be hard-pressed to find many years, if any, when the overall talent level is as low as it is right now. If that doesn't change you'll be looking at mediocrity, at best, in the future.

First, I think the Duling-Nwanko-Frederick class leaves a lot to be desired.
But Avery is solid, Pippen is improving, JWalker is proven and ADR is solid/improving. E8 aside, All would be in the Top 8 rotation on just about any KSU team since then for sure.

TBD are the two players sitting out, and the two (known) players coming in.

Let's give the opposition (Buffalo/EMU/BSU/Toledo) a little credit for getting better. Still don't think KSU is out of touch with any of them.

I'm excited to see what Harris and Whittington can do. If we had a sophomore put up the numbers they put up we'd be pretty optimistic about their future. Heck, Whittington's sophomore year line is very similar to what Pippen just did other than three point shooting. Now he did do it against lower competition level. Hopefully they both found ways to take advantage of the year off to improve. I know Harris had a knee surgery. Hopefully it wasn't a completely wasted year for him though.

I really think Duling will be a star before he graduates.

According to an Allen Moff tweet, Jonathan Nwankwo and Taishaun Johnson have left the program.

No surprise there. Nwankwo had 8 points and 3 rebounds total for the season and Johnson scored 16 points in the first two games and hasn’t been with the team since mid-December.

Not surprising on either. It probably never really made sense to recruit Nwankwo unless they didn't think he was a project. You don't really want a project in a season you have two redshirts. Doesn't make for a deep roster. The only path for him being successful here would've been if he beat out Frederick and Duling. With all 4 bigs in front of him coming back, and Whittington coming into the fold he really didn't have much of a chance of getting on the court next year. Hopefully he finds somewhere where he can use the redshirt year to develop. It's a real shame we didn't have another wing using that scholarship.

REMEMBER ... this time last season ADR did not look like much more than a 10-minute backup, if that. Nwankwo's resume (VCU/Juco)hinted at something better. Injury may have impacted his performance more than we know.
GOOD NEWS ... ADR proved to be what most thought Nwankwo would be ... sadly, Nwankwo was not as good as ADR, even last year.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
Looks like BG is losing a few underclassmen. Two freshmen and a Sophomore that were in the rotation are leaving. Rodrick Caldwell, So. PG, 24.8 MPG, 11.8 PER, Dereck Koch, Fr. PF, 21.4 MPG, 14.7 PER, and Nelly Cummings, Fr. PG, 13.2 MPG, 9.6 PER are all transferring. So I guess they won't return as much experience as we thought.

The only other MAC rotation player that's announced they're transfer yet (according to VerbalCommits) is Reggie Jones from WMU. He's a SO. G, 23.6 MPG, 14.8 PER. He looked like he was going to be a real good one after starting half of the season as a freshman, hitting 9.4 PPG, shooting over 40% from three, and having a PER of 17. Overall he had a solid So. season (10.1 PPG) but he only started 6 games and his 3 point shooting dropped off significantly to 29.5%.

I'm sure more names will be added to this list over the next couple weeks.

Nwankwo already used his redshirt year at Virginia Commonwealth. After being in school for 3 years, going back to NJCAA probably isn't an option.

Also - I see that Leo Edwards went over to NCAA2 Arkansas Tech this season. When he left Kent State the press release said 'he'd graduated and didn't plan on continuing his college career'. He didn't get a lot of minutes, but he played more than Nwankwo did.

Ali's team Eastern Florida (8 seed) advanced to the quarterfinals of the njcaa tornament today. They'll be facing the 16 seed Barton C.C. who beat the one seed Indian Hills in OT. Barton has Kwanise Wilkins, a 6'6" wing we recently offered. Here's hoping Ali has a big game and makes Wilkins like the idea of playing with him next year.

ADLR had to have knee surgery. Didn't realize the injury was that serious. The article did not specify the specifics of the surgery. Hopefully he will be good to go this fall.

Geez, not a lot of info there. What was the injury? It says he's targeting a return for the beginning of the season. Will it be around then or are they just saying he should be ready by then? This is really unfortunate because AD really needed to keep improving on his mobility this off season to take the next step. Time to start swimming.

317 transfers and counting for D1. Bernstein, Nwanko, Johnson, Ridenour, & Zabo out. I think that leaves Senderoff/staff a few open scholarships. Not sure if those will go to high school seniors, JC, or transfers?

PG & a SG/wing committed thus far. What position or player do you think Senderoff/staff should fill the 2 open scholarships with?

Verbalcommits.com has a lot of offers still open for Kent State.

RE: Mens Basketball Offseason
Bernstein was not a scholarship player. I read an interesting article about the Loyola of Chicago coach, who is against the possible rule change that allows all players to transfer without having to sit out. His point was that players he recruited that excel will leave for schools in power conferences. If there was a rule change, and I'm not certain how likely that is, what would happen at Kent State is that very few would leave to move up, and KSU would get players that realize they aren't really suited for the lofty level and move down. Plus, non D 1 players that feel they can move up.
