ODU Giving Day
https://give.funderbolt.io/odugivingday
So apparently today is ODU giving day. This is important because participation in these types of things and percentage of alumni giving helps with rankings and perception. It also helps students. Personally, I just gave to a scholarship fund.
If the tally is correct, ODU has a pathetically low amount of people giving today considering the effort apparently put into this. Approximately 150 people have given out of over 120,000 alumni. In contrast, the school I work for, (and just the school, not the whole university) has over 1,000 donors with only 60,000 alumni.
Just a reminder to give if you wish.

Athletics has only 7 people who have contributed (I am not one of them). The average gift however is over $1,000. So thats good.

That's how these one-day campaigns work. Regular reminders. It was actually pretty well done.
My friend at W&M tells me they started a one-day campaign 5 years ago with a goal of 1693 donors. Last year they had 14,000; this year hoping for 15,000. Tribe Pride they call it. Where's ours?

RE: ODU Giving Day
My take is that ODU has turned this into another ODU childish gimic. Donate $100 and we'll give you some socks. What a joke.
They need to change the culture so that students want to give back to the school. Not just on some random day for a pair of cheap socks.
I am not impressed at all by this

ODU needs to change the culture so that students want to give back to the school. Not just on some random day for a pair of cheap socks. If you want people to buy in, first don't give them some pointless thing like a pair of socks. Give them something that they can be proud of that shows school pride. Something they can display on their desk at work or something they use. The whole thing just came off as very childish.
Also, a way that would help would be to tell people what they are donating to. New academic buildings? New programs? Is it going to the School of Engineering or the School of Business? Its all very arbitrary and I would like to know what my money is going to. Give people more specific information on what their money is going to.
I hope they can come up with something better than socks.

I believe you can designate which department to give to. My wife donated to School of Ed yesterday. That's as specific as it needs to be, IMO.

You're looking for a capital campaign. This is not that. This is an annual event to help drive more giving by alums.

I hear what you're saying, but this is something that many, many schools, even highly ranking ones. Often, these types of days are as much about building school pride and a pattern of giving as they are about the final tally of dollars. They want money of course, but they also want alumni to be engaged with their alma mater and giving back. Im sure they would rather have 5,000 small gifts of $20 than one $100,000 gift for an effort like this
Also, stylish socks are very popular with younger alumni and college students now. We did the same type giveaway where I work and ran out quickly. People LOVED the socks. Its a small incentive to be involved more than anything. If you're looking for a $50 donation, you don't want your premium to cost $10. Im sure if people give tens of thousand of dollars they will get something more than socks.

BTW, you engineering guys need to step up. The art students are giving 4x as much as you. I know you all make the big bucks by comparison. :)

They're on the website. Go to the link on the first post. And I was just having fun with you engineering guys... thus the smiley face at the end.

I'm borderline. A "xennial" I guess i'm called now so you can thank me for starting the sock thing... now that it's popular I gotta go find another trend to start. /brushes shoulders off/ =]
But seriously ya, socks. I'm rocking my dope pizza socks today.
ECU has made a wonderful example to follow regarding this topic with their Pirate Club.

I was rocking the sandals and socks in the late 90s but the girls didn't like the look. Now its a fad on college campuses.

RE: ODU Giving Day
I have been a donor for many years to include donations to both the academics and athletics programs. Invariably, when I try to make a donation there is some snafu in the way that ODU folks structure how they accept payment. It just seems like the degree of oversight is lacking in many areas. This year, they gave the option of entering credit card information...not until the very end of the process was there any notification as to which types of credit cards could be used to make the donation (you guessed it...they won’t accept one and maybe more of the major credit cards). A simple thing but nevertheless it caused me to have to start the entire donation process over again. Oh well, that’s what we have to work with...
