Good call on Red Wolves!
As an Appalachian American, I find the depiction offensive. Also, the name Yosef is not uncommon in Hasidic Judaism, nor are beards. I absolutely am not serious that I'm offended by any of it, but don't ever be surprised that someone finds something asinine or innocent as offensive.
That old man winter logo yall had was offensive to fish boat captains everywhere. Glad yall changed.
I could seriously see App dropping the pipe from Yosef's mouth. No tobacco use endorsement etc..
Tobacco?! Please...we all know an App grad.

Name is awesome.
Real animal that it's based off of...not so much..
Maybe not cool to look at but they are cool little (or big depending on who you're asking) creatures. But y'all could've had some fun with that as your mascot.

If you don't think Mountaineer will ever be deemed 'offensive' at some point... you just wait.
Not like we made Mountaineers walk across half the country and get put on reservations.

The debate is still ongoing. I've always maintained he was in fact "Doug's" half brother

I always liked Red and yes he and Doug were brothers. His mother had a Cherokee boy friend right after Doug's Dad was run over in a buffalo stampede.

Had a convo with two NC State underclassmen this weekend who stayed with my wife and I. They commented that the campus was beautiful, but there was so much cannabis the school is a "pot school." The High Times illusion seems to still exists, although children are taking cannabis to avoid seizures... I kinda looked at them amused, as i never "partook" as a student -- only in my senior year of high school and post-war years in my 30s in a desperate attempt to come off the 13 meds the VA had pres cribed me..... I was hoping for a miracle drug, but just ended up eating all the cereal in my house. Anyway, it's interesting what fallacies stick and what fallacies attempted to stick do not in fact stick............ such as the fact we're a buncha reefer addicts vs the fact we're Hot Hot Hot! We have our Birkenstock trust fund hippies, but there are plenty of us that just want to drive to Comeback Shack without a Floridian cutting us off. Watauga County is God's country.

For giggles, here are some of the other names that at one point in time during the mascot change process had been tossed around...
Gorillas, Fighting Farmers, Woodpeckers, Mosquitos, Diamonds, Hellbenders, Express, Engines, Mallards, Dragons, Scarlet Fever, Scarlet A's, Tornados, Ridge Runners, Ridge Raiders, Rice Birds, Aggies, Dragons, Crop Dusters and of course (Black/Scarlet/Red) Wolves
(I'm sure there are WAY more I'm forgetting)
ULM changed theirs in 2005 for the same reasons as stAte. How did you get to hang onto the Indians moniker for three more years? I had thought both schools changed at more-or-less the same time.
The university was very slow and deliberate with the change (not to mention quite a bit of vocal outcry from fans regarding the notion of a change) and from my understanding, there were efforts to find the support/backing from a specific tribe (Osage, Quapaw, Cherokee Caddo, etc) but it never came.
I think our Native American imagery was based on the Quapaw, correct? I dont know if its true, but I remember hearing we reached out to the that tribe for endorsement.
They came back with an astronomical amount. We said, nah, we'll just change.
Best forced decision ever.
You’re saying the imagery we used with the Indian family?
I was told we were based on Osage, but there were a huge amount of conflicts with our presentation. For one, the Osage tribes didn’t have a ‘Indian princess’.
Also, our chief wore a war bonnet, but Osage didn’t have those.

We were once the gorillas. I always kinda like that as a throwback. The Hellbenders was understood to well in the state. Everyone saw it as a salamander and didn't get the fact that Hellbenders was a huge opportunity to take it another direction.

My choice, outside of Red Wolves, was the Cottonmouths/Water Moccasins. Being a top rice producer, this state is covered up with them....and they’re nasty.

I have always wondered what the mascot would have looked like had we chose hellbenders Because an actual hellbender is perhaps the most lame looking lizard there ever was.
Woodpeckers would have been amazing just for every "Lets go Peckers" chant that happened after that. The true story is that our mascot change came at a time when it had been thought that a previously thought extinct breed of woodpecker had been spotted in Arkansas. For a while, our fans were all over the idea of naming ourselves after the creature. Honestly though, I'm fairly confident that the bird was never spotted. Still no proof to this day.
What's interesting with the Red Wolves mascot is that the logo was student designed.

With the deer season exodus that y'all experience, I was thinking something along the lines of the "Bow Hunters".

They're actually salamanders, which are cool in their own right, but far less badass than a lizard of that size.

there was no way to continue on-we could've gone the North Dakota route and fought it tooth and nail for years and ultimately the pressure from both NCAA and public pressure would've forced the university's hand

I never understood why people get offended by mascots. Mascots are used to represent a team or school you're proud off. People are going to pick a mascot they're proud off; it should be seen as a sign of respect imo. That's why you don't see mascots like the dandelions, the hugs, the cuddly bunnies, or anything like that. There's no wow factor.
