(03-13-2018 01:34 PM)EverRespect Wrote:  The AAC is a long-term impossibility... at least as is. The only way waiting works is if the AAC falls apart... in other words, Cinncinati and Houston bolt to the Big 12, which would spark UConn and then Memphis to go Big East/Independent and Navy to do whatever they want. At that point, the AAC, CUSA, MAC and Sunbelt are all pretty much equal suck and three new conferences can emerge with Southern (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi), Western (Texas, OK, Louisiana, Arkansas), and Mid Atlantic (VA, WV, TN, KY, NC, SC, PA) schools. That would leave us with Temple, Coastal, App State, ECU, UNC-C, JMU, Liberty, Marshall, MTSU, WKU. It isn't the A10, but at least 7 out of the 10 would be relatively reachable away games and the Richmond Coliseum would be a logical tournament host. This is a good 10 years down the road and things will have to fall perfectly in place. I don't have the patience and Lil' Woody doesn't have the acumen to plot that course.

Best-case AAC scenario for ODU is if they lose one school, say Cincinnati, to the Big 12 (which also adds a MWC school like Colorado State to get to 12). The AAC isn't incentivized to get back to 12 schools, and if they lost two then they'd stay at 10. But if they lose one or three, then they need to get back at least to an even number. ODU replaces Cincinnati, everything else stays the same—that's the most-ideal scenario, however implausible it may be.

But even a compromised AAC would be a step up. If they lost Cincy, Houston and UConn to the Big 12 and Big East, the other schools would still collectively be stronger than any of them would be independently. It's one thing to trade a CUSA and Sun Belt schedule for independence, but a rump AAC schedule would still be more attractive than a independent one, especially if they backfill successfully.

Why would AAC add us over a team who has consistently proven to compete at a higher level, such as Middle Tennessee? Are we really the top option? A lot has to fall into place for us to move up

Not to mention, if Cincy leaves, what is to keep UConn and Memphis sticking around? They might as well go to the Big East and go indy for football. Not like Memphis has any rivalries other than Cincy and UConn is a basketball school. The Big East only has 10 teams. They can easily accomodate. They may even be willing to take Wichita State as well.

Where's Memphis going to go? The only, repeat, only AAC school that the Big East is likely to consider is UConn because of the long history they have with the BE and its member institutions. Memphis doesn't have that, plus they'd be another Midwestern school which would wrench the center of the conference further from its traditional base of power. Plus they'd still keep a longing eye to the Big 12 or any all-sports conference, unless you think they'd downgrade or drop football, which is pretty much not going to happen.

The Big East appears happy with a 10-team conference that can accommodate a double round-robin. If they expand, they're a lot more likely to take Dayton and/or St. Louis, which are much more institutionally congruent with the membership, geographic issues aside (in other words, they're a lot more likely to take a Midwest Catholic school than a Midwest large public institution with FBS football).

Honestly, I think they'd take VCU before Memphis because at least VCU is on the 95 corridor and they'll probably never have football. And the Big East isn't taking VCU.

I think the key is to reunite as many athletic programs under one roof as possible. The A10 will take care of that sans football, wrestling and sailing. However, I don't think Field Hockey and Lacrosse will want to leave the prestigious Big East.

Of course the ACC sponsors all of our sports.

It's always difficult to separate the present from the future.

But it is good to hear that another of our teams will have a bi-yearly cross country trip. This time to Denver. Very economical.

ODU is already in the Big East per agreement. Logistics demands at least one season to transition.

I voted A10 BB and independent football but I am not sold on that 100%. Actually, there are two outcomes I would not want. #1. Going back to FCS FB #2. Stay in CUSA for a long time. Other than that I could live with other options.

CUSA with eyes on moving soon or putting pressure on the big wigs to cut some of the fat during the next round of realignment. Not happy with the current conference...

Well, yes. I'm not a huge football guy either. If I had the choice to burn football to the ground for basketball to go to the A10 as is then I'd do it. I just think staying FBS once we are here is the better move, even if that means going independent. I also don't really know what I'm talking about, so there's that too.

I'm not a non football fan. If the weather is nice and the game is competitive, I enjoy attending football as much as basketball. Weighing the pros and cons, I just think it is more important we get to the A10. I voted for CAA football, but if we can do that and keep football FBS, I'm fine with it. I'm just skeptical. According to Harry M on Twitter last night:

Quote:Little chance of joining the AAC. ODU doesn't have enough of a football history and there are so many other good candidates out there. A new football-only league with A-10 in basketball is ODU's best hope.

This is a compelling option that is not in the poll... a sort of combination of 2-5 with A10 basketball and Sunbelt realignment for football. I'm fine with that. It isn't that the goal is to downgrade football as much as create the best overall solution. Bottom line is the status quo is not sustainable for all sports and we aren't getting into the AAC. The Sunbelt realignment for football could work for us, especially if it Liberty and JMU and Delaware move up, but it is still too far flung and weak for basketball and non-revenue sports to make a hill of beans worth of a difference to the bottom line if you include all sports. According to Harry, there have been discussions, but right now Marshall and WKU are not interested. The problem with the football only conference is the other CUSA schools will have to find a home for their other sports. The Missouri Valley is down to 10 so maybe they would take 2 of them... say MTSU and WKU, which would be an improvement from their standpoints. Still leaves Marshall and probably UAB. The Horizon might be a good fit for Marshall, but not sure where UAB could go that would kill their basketball.

The sports conference needs to promote our brand. CUSA dilutes the brand. The schools are small, unknown and academically poor. The A10 is not the ivy league but it is comprised of far more schools on our level or the level we are trying to reach.

I tried capturing what HM said as a catch-all with saying FBS independent. With UMass and Liberty fellow independents, that's 2 games on the schedule each year. I would think there might be more schools willing to go independent if there were others to schedule with on a consistent basis, therefore forming a "conference" scheduling-wise.

If JMU and Delaware would commit moving up and taking that option, I'd say do it. Interestingly, he didn't say MTSU was against it. I wonder if they already have a contingency plan. They wouldn't be that big of an outlier in the MVC, nor would WKU.

I don't really want to downgrade to FCS, I voted for football independent, but I would rather move back to FCS than stay in CUSA for another decade or more.

I think some see G5 as not a whole lot different than FCS at this point, only without a playoff, and frankly there is a pretty valid case for that. G5 is 100% not competing in the same league as the P5, even if they throw a bone to 1 G5 a year as an appeasement. The only real difference I see in favor of CUSA football is home games with ACC teams, which at this point, are not that exciting to me knowing the likely outcome. I think a FCS championship run would be a lot more exciting.

Staying FBS has one HUGE advantage, however. The opportunity to move up eventually. If we stay G5 long enough, there is always the chance of being VT 50 years from now, or ECU 20 years from now, but the more small minded moves we see from our admin, and the more we see that we apparently can't afford to compete as s top G5 while also maintaining a top mid major basketball program, the harder that long term possibility becomes for me to imagine.

RE: Where would you rather be?
The A10/CAA Football hybrid isn't going to happen. The CAA will insist that anyone new members of CAA Football are all sports members. The two A-10 schools that are in the CAA for football date back to it being the A-10 Football Conference (possibly the Yankee Conference). You really think that the CAA would be cool with Wood and J-Brod making a call saying "Hey guys remember us? Would it be cool if we dropped football back down to 1-AA and joined your football conference?" The CAA brass would laugh before hanging up the phone. The best we could hope to do from an A-10/1-AA Football hybrid would be the SoCon.

Edited because I really need to proof things before I hit post.
